Yesterday’s first ever Art at the Market with ou

Yesterday’s first ever Art at the Market with our friends of @garfieldparkfarmersmarket was a total success! We are very thankful to have joined the valued community of vendors and patrons and to see so many faces out in the community, both familiar and new. Our setup included our Postcard Project with some of your favorite Big Car Collaborative merch, art pieces crafted by the team’s Lead Builder, Jason Gray, as well as a vast collection of paperback books and vintage clothing from current board member and Big Car Collaborative Co-Founder, John Clark. We look forward to participating in more Art at the Market events in the future—in the meantime, do be sure to check out the weekly Garfield Park Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings and pop by Normal Coffee at @tubeartspace after to enjoy a warm, neighborhood-favorite coffee experience!

Fall through the looking glass with us October 21

Fall through the looking glass with us October 21 6-9pm at Lockerbie! (320 N New Jersey) Artists @landonscaldwell & @mark_tester will perform a live soundtrack to #JanSvankmajer #Alice @boxburgerfoodtruck & @sunkingbrewing will help fill your bellys. Loosely based on the the classic Alice in Wonderland story, the colors and proportions are dreamlike and lucid — even more so than one might imagine, and the pace in which it moves is both enchanting and perplexing. Svankmajer calls it a children’s film, but any adult would be equally as entertained by the strangeness of it all.

About Landon Caldwell & Mark Tester: Caldwell & Tester are Indianapolis based artists, musicians, composers, and producers. Their duo work explores various niches in electronic music with a focus on process, often incorporating spontaneous composition & experimentation with an array of technology, creating works that harness rhythm, ambience, and melody to conjure meditations on fleeting sensations and early morning comedowns.
Together they have toured in the United States, Canada, and Europe and are regularly engaged with artists and musicians across the Midwest and beyond. Since 2016 they have operated Medium Sound, producing a number of the label's releases.

The third installment of Words & Music: An audio s

The third installment of Words & Music: An audio series exploring the life and work of Indiana writers airs Saturday at 8 pm on @wqrtfm (and you can listen anytime via the link in our bio).

In this episode, we learn about two new books linked to music from poet Adrian Matejka — pictured here in Berlin. He grew up, in part, in Germany. We learn a bit about his life and how he became a poet also in the episode.

Words & Music is made possible by a grant from @inhumanities . And is a project of @bigcarpix , the nonprofit behind WQRT.

@adrian.matejka , who lives in Indianapolis, teaches at Indiana University in Bloomington and grew up in Germany, California, and in Indiana.

The first of his two books just out, published by @penguinusa , is called Somebody Else Sold the World. The other is really two smaller books in one in which Adrian and two visual artists friends collaborated in response to the music of Funkadelic in images and poems. @thirdmanbooks is the publisher.

Adrian also has four earlier collections of poems published and is the former Poet Laureate of Indiana.

This episode is divided into two parts. In the first, Adrian introduces his story and talks a bit about his process. The second is a conversation between Adrian and host, @jim_jwalker .

Fields include — and are not limited to — architecture, culinary art, curation, visual art, public art, furniture, fashion, craft, design, film and video, creative writing and journalism, performing arts, music, theater, placemaking, socially engaged art, etc.

We’re so happy to have teamed up with @citizense

We’re so happy to have teamed up with @citizensenergygroup on the latest DigIndy Art Project — this time the Tlāloc mural designed and painted by Samuel “Gemini” Peñaloza @arte.de.sammy with support from Big Car Collaborative artists and installed by our team at 3750 W. Washington St.

This mural by Peñaloza — designed with input from Westside residents (engagement led by @eddiecalaca ) — celebrates an aspect of the community’s cultural heritage, our city’s natural beauty, and the future of cleaner waterways throughout Indianapolis neighborhoods.

Citizens Energy Group’s DigIndy Tunnel System, a 28-mile network of tunnels under construction 250 feet below the city, will virtually eliminate sewage overflows into area rivers and streams.

A prominent feature of the mural is Tlāloc, supreme god of water, rain, and earthly fertility in ancient Aztec religions of Mexico. People worshiped and feared Tlāloc as they believed he could give both sustenance for life and send storms and floods with the powerful element of water.

About the artist: Peñaloza was born in Los Angeles. Surrounded by graffiti while growing up, Samuel always felt a strong connection to art, but had little access to formal training. When Samuel was 8, his single mother moved to Indianapolis, looking for a better future for herself and her children. Here, art teacher Kim Dax took an interest in Samuel and nurtured his talent. He has been creating ever since — showing his work across the city in galleries and with street art murals.

Calling all artists and community-based organizati

Calling all artists and community-based organizations! As part of the #indykeepscreating 2021 series of public programs and events, grants are now available from $500 to $5,000 to support artist engagement in community-centric events in Indianapolis. Grant funds can be used for events from Aug. 1-Dec. 31, 2021. So that means past payments to artists can be reimbursed and even increased.

This is powered by federal American Rescue Act Plan funding administered through @indy_dmd in partnership with the @artscouncilindy

Big Car is the partner administering the Cultural Connection Grants.

More details: Individual artists, community-based organizations, and other entities offering public programming (does not need to be a 501c3 nonprofit organization) in Marion County are eligible. Applicants can be Marion County-based arts organizations and individual artists collaborating with other entities.
