As a starting project with our work in the Garfield Park neighborhood south of downtown Indianapolis, Big Car collaborated with the Garfield Park Neighbors Association (GPNA) in 2012 on a gateway mural placed at the northern entrance to the neighborhood at Shelby and Raymond streets.
Big Car co-founder and creative director Andy Fry designed the Welcome to Garfield Park mural in collaboration with a large group of neighbors who offered input on the themes and content through a process led by co-founder and executive director, Jim Walker.
More than 50 neighbors also volunteered to help paint the mural with the Big Car team, working on sawhorses and easels under the towering oak trees as leaves fell in the park. Hard costs of the mural were funded by a grant by Lowe’s and Keep America Beautiful and Big Car staff donated our time to this project.
In 2025, GPNA with Board President Rich Whitney led a collaboration with Big Car and Fry to repair and maintain the mural with support through a Public Art for Neighborhoods grant from the City of Indianapolis.
