Designed by Indianapolis-based artist Julie Xiao, Take Flight is a nature-inspired mural featuring peonies, Indiana’s state flower, and hummingbirds commonly seen throughout the Garfield Park neighborhood. Together, these symbols represent joy, luck, beauty, and perseverance. A walk in nature is known to improve mood and reduce stress, and the mural brings a moment of brightness and calm to everyone who passes by.
The mural is located at Tube Processing Corporation on East Street in the Garfield Park neighborhood and offers a colorful, uplifting presence for drivers stopped by passing trains, as well as for people and families walking through the area. Tube Processing Corporation commissioned Take Flight, and Xiao created the mural through a partnership with local arts nonprofit Big Car Collaborative. Xiao painted the mural with assistance from Ess McKee and Big Car staff.
