SUMMARY:Walking Wednesdays at Lugar Plaza: Italian History
DESCRIPTION:A Downtown Indianapolis Italian History Tour \nBrush up on your Indianapolis Italian history! Led by Ray E. Brown Jr. of the Italian Heritage Society of Indiana\, this 2-mile walking tour explores the history of Italian fruit vendors\, proceeds to Fletcher Place with stops at Holy Rosary Church (the traditional heart of the Italian community) and the bocce courts there. End up with a drink or dinner on your own at Iaria’s\, Turchetti’s or Bluebeard before heading back to Lugar Plaza. \nFree and open to the public // All ages\nMEET at Lugar Plaza near the swings. We don’t walk if the weather is terrible. Tour will be rescheduled to Tuesday\, October 1 in case of rain. \nFree parking may be available at 320 E. Market. Or take the Red Line bus. A driving option is available for the tour. Contact IHSI through their website if you want to drive the route. \nAbout the Italian Heritage Society\nThe Italian Heritage Society of Indiana is a non-profit organization\, established in 1993\, as an offshoot of the Columbus ’92 Commission for the State of Indiana\, which worked tediously for three years so that the State of Indiana could participate in our nation’s year long celebration of the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ Discovery of America. The enthusiasm of this project brought together a variety of people with family roots from all parts of Italy. More than six hundred persons of Italian descent and many non-Italian friends who have a fondness for the Italian culture and its arts contributed to the establishment of this Society. Since its foundation\, the Society has continued to offer its members many enjoyable activities and opportunities for fellowship. \nBrought to you in partnership with City of Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development and Big Car Collaborative. \nTo learn more about events at Lugar Plaza\, visit lugarplaza.org.

SUMMARY:Saya Woolfalk: Empathic Cloud Divination
DESCRIPTION:In this new exhibition\, New-York-based multi-media artist Saya Woolfalk explores our understanding of the human condition — a state of affairs governed by seemingly unavoidable conflicts such as birth\, growth\, and death. This show explores how technology has allowed us to ease our suffering by making change less difficult and transformation more enjoyable. Perhaps the ultimate human technological advancement would be the elimination of mortality by extending human life indefinitely in a biological\, digital\, or other virtual state. Recent advances suggest our species may already be on the cusp of achieving this evolutionary landmark. \nWoolfalk’s exhibit at Tube Factory includes her signature installations\, sculptures\, prints\, video art works\, and the works of artists who influence her practice. It builds on one of her first projects\, No Place (a play on the translation of the word utopia)\, where she collaborated with filmmaker and anthropologist Rachel Lears. Both then in their mid 20s\, they invited people into Woolfalk’s studio to talk about their ideas of utopia and created work from there. \n“Similar to the way you would construct a folktale\, we took these ideas and we constructed the culture of the NoPlaceans. People would come to the studio\, put on costumes and enact the things that they were imagining\,” says Woolfalk who created a six-chapter ethnographic film about this future utopian world based on people’s visions. \nTo explore the conceptual boundaries of this cultural moment\, this also led Woolfalk to create a fictional transhuman species known as the Empathics\, which she describes as a race of women who are able to alter their genetic make-up and fuse with plants. “If you have a utopia\, then how do you actually make that utopia real? I worked with biologists at Tufts University to think about what in nature could occur in order for people to mutate to become more like plants.” \nWoolfalk’s Tube Factory installation will extend the story of the Empathics\, blending multi-media aesthetic phenomena\, spirituality\, cultural hybridization\, capitalism\, technoscience\, and artificial intelligence to conjure a broad network of interconnecting philosophical strands. Informed equally by science fiction and anthropology\, the morally ambiguous future that the exhibit shares is open to the interpretation of its viewers. “Going from modularity to monumentality is how I approach my practice. I work in ways that are incredibly small and I also work in ways that are incredibly big. The work functions like collage.” \nShould we fear the world Woolfalk and other transhumanist artists are mapping? Should we embrace it? Should we shrug it off as a Pollyannic fantasy\, doomed by the human idiot factor? Woolfalk seems to be implying a potentially disturbing fourth option: Some of us — particularly those with special status or outlandish means — have already started to transform. Is this art\, or a warning shot across the cultural bow of the human race? \n\nAbout the artist  \nWoolfalk (b 1979\, Japan) is a pioneer within an emergent\, international aesthetic movement examining transhumanism — a theoretical belief that humans will mobilize technology to transcend their biological limitations and evolve into a non-human\, or “posthuman” race. With each body of work\, Woolfalk continues to build the narrative of The Empathics and questions the utopian possibilities of cultural hybridity. She has exhibited at museums\, galleries\, and alternative spaces throughout Asia\, Europe and the United States including solo exhibitions at the Montclair Art Museum\, Montclair\, NJ (2012); the Chrysler Museum of Art\, Norfolk\, VA (2014); the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (2014); SCAD Museum\, Savannah\, GA (2016); Everson Museum of Art\, Syracuse\, NY (2016); Sheldon Museum of Art\, Lincoln\, NE (2016); the Mead Museum of Art\, Amherst\, MA (2017) and group shows at the Studio Museum in Harlem; MoMA PS1\, Long Island City\, NY; the Warhol Museum\, Pittsburgh\, PA.\, the Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, among many others. \n“When I started making work it was very important that it was not autobiographical\,” says Woolfalk. “The work is not about me at all. The work is about talking to people about their ideas and trying to understand what’s going on in the world then taking that material and adapting it into installation based spaces that people can experience.” \nMade possible by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and The Efroymson Family Fund. \nPart of the Social Alchemy Series\, this exhibition is in partnership with the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art. \nImage: Saya Woolfalk\, Encyclopedia of Cloud Divination\, Plate 2\, 30”x40”\, 2018.

SUMMARY:Cult of Color:Call to Color
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Saya Woolfalk: Empathic Cloud Divination\, the Main Gallery video room will screen Ballet Austin’s “Cult of Color: Call to Color\,” a collaboration by choreographer and Ballet Austin artistic director Stephen Mills\, visual artist Trenton Doyle Hancock and composer Graham Reynolds. \n“Cult of Color: Call to Color” is a chapter in Trenton Doyle Hancock’s ongoing artistic mythology. Hancock’s paintings\, sculpture\, drawings\, prints\, and individual performances work together to represent his characters\, the Mounds\, the Vegans\, and other imaginative creatures\, who are at the center of the artist’s unfolding operatic narrative. Hancock’s characters and their dilemmas embody themes of life and death\, the struggle between good and evil\, love\, authority\, spirituality and moral relativism. Biblical in scope\, mythological in content\, and comic book in style\, the story tells of a battle fought between the gentle Mounds and the mutant Vegans. In this chapter of Hancock’s story we are introduced to the Vegan minister\, Sesom (Moses spelled backwards) who\, like his namesake\, offers the possibility of salvation to the unruly and war-like Vegan followers through the intervention of a loving character\, Painter. And\, just as all the Vegans appear to convert to the goodness of “The Cult of Color\,” one antagonist\, Betto Watchow\, resists. The ensuing violent struggles for power between these forces of will are at the core of this episode of Hancock’s tale. Balancing moral dilemmas with wit and a musical sense of language and color\, Hancock creates a painterly space of psychological dimension. \nThe Collaboration\nThis unique project originated with Stephen Mills\, Ballet Austin’s Artistic Director\, who invited Trenton Doyle Hancock and Graham Reynolds to collaborate with him to create a new ballet based on Hancock’s ongoing visual narrative. Reynolds composed the music as well as the sound environments\, and Mills created the unique choreography. Hancock conceived the story\, designed the costumes\, sets and properties which include a backdrop curtain and fabric made in collaboration with The Fabric Workshop and Museum\, Philadelphia.”–Via Arthouse (Austin\, TX) \nThe work was selected by Woolfalk and Tube Factory curator\, Shauta Marsh as part of a series of artists that have influenced Woolfalk’s work. “Cult of Color: Call to Color” will run through October 3. \nAbout Hancock\nTrenton Doyle Hancock was born in 1974 in Oklahoma City\, OK. Raised in Paris\, Texas\, Hancock earned his BFA from Texas A&M University\, Commerce\, and his MFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University\, Philadelphia. Hancock was featured in the 2000 and 2002 Whitney Biennial exhibitions\, at the time becoming one of the youngest artists in history to participate in the prestigious survey. In 2014\, his exhibition\, Skin & Bones: 20 Years of Drawing\, at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston traveled to Akron Art Museum\, OH; Studio Museum in Harlem\, NY; and Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art\, VA. In 2019\, a major exhibition of his work\, Mind of the Mound: Critical Mass\, opened at MASS MoCA\, North Adams\, MA in 2019. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Temple Contemporary\, Philadelphia\, PA; the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis\, MO; the Ringling Museum of Art\, Sarasota\, FL; the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum\, Tampa\, FL; the Savannah College of Art and Design\, Savannah and Atlanta\, GA; The Weatherspoon Museum\, Greensboro\, NC; The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. SUMMARY:Brittany Rudolf: Collapse
DESCRIPTION:COLLAPSE is an alternative rest-stop which brings the outdoors inside. An audio/visual installation created by Brittany Rudolf\, COLLAPSE contrasts a spa experience with a camping trip\, to\nrenegotiate who we are in spite of\, as a condition of\, and alongside the periphery of stress. The project s a temporary\, working arrangement to think through the precariousness of increasing environmental\, political\, and social unrest. The tendency is perhaps to turn away from all of it\, but we\nreceive daily reminders that things are not ok. COLLAPSE aims to simultaneously transport and ground. Through a combination of familiar but surreal markers\, visitors are prompted to briefly\nunwind. \nBrittany is a mixed media artist originally from Indianapolis\, now living in Portland\, Oregon. She builds upon mood and environment to create multi-sensory experiences that bring awareness to one’s own body\, other people\, and the earth. Her work implicates stewardship as a primary site for\nconsideration\, and she uses uncanny familiarity to subtly draw connections between the liminal space of what we think we know\, discovery\, and comfort.
