SUMMARY:Keenan Lawler\, John Krausbauer\, and David Dove
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of experimental compositions at the Tube Factory Artspace. Three sonic wizards come to town to perform solo sets of electroacoustic music. This will be a great evening show you don’t want to miss! \nDave Dove (TX)\nKeneen Lawler (KY)\nJohn Krausbauer (CA) \nKeenan Lawler is a Louisville Kentucky based musician\, sound artist\, improviser and composer. For nearly thirty years he has been a restless explorer of sound. Lawler’s music can be found on such labels as Important\,Tompkins Square\, New American Folk Hero\, Music Fellowship\, Rebis\, Eclipse and Table of the Elements who released the acclaimed\,”Music for the Bluegrass States”. He performs live regularly and has participated in such festivals as High Zero\, Fantastic Voyagers\, Avantronics\, Time of Rivers\, Nutstock\,Greetings Fellow Pickers\,Transmissions\,Terrastock 7\, Wintervoid2\, Table of the Elements Bohrium\, Boomslang\, Louisville Experimental Fest and New Music for Early Instruments. \nhttps://m.soundcloud.com/r-keenan-lawler \n**************************************************************\nJohn Krausbauer is a music maker currently living in Los Angeles. He will be performing an extended-durational piece for amplified violin\, voice and synth\, utilizing high volumes\, just tunings and stroboscopic lighting\, to create an immersive experiential sound environment.\nKrausbauer has performed his music in a multitude of settings – from basements and rock clubs to colleges and art galleries. Numerous recordings of his work have been released on independent labels in both the US and Europe. In recent years his focus has been on his solo work\, involving ritual endurance happenings with voice and violin\, accompanied by synth and strobes; his compositions\, mainly concerned with systems-based phasing constructions; the Ecstatic Music Band\, exploring just tunings with amplified strings at high volumes and long durations\, with stroboscopic lighting; The Essentialists\, a country-blues-boogie-raga guitar/violin duo; and most recently the formation of the “M”inimalist psych-punk group\, Night Collectors.\nTrance-Psychedelia is the aim and goal. \nhttps://debaclerecords.bandcamp.com/album/blues-for-the-grave \n**************************************************************\nDavid Dove (Houston\, Texas)\nA trombone player\, composer\, improviser\, and educator\, David Dove has given performances and workshops across North America and internationally. As Founding Director of Nameless Sound (a non-profit organization in Houston\, Texas)\, he curates/presents a concert series of international contemporary creative music\, and has developed an approach\, philosophy and practice of creative music education based on creativity and improvisation. Dove has written on music pedagogy\, including a chapter titled “The Music is the Pedagogy” that has been published in the collection “Beyond the Classroom” (Routledge). Dove’s early musical background ranged from studies in jazz and symphonic music\, to punk rock bands. As a creative artist\, free improvisation has been his primary (but not exclusive) approach to performance and collaboration. In addition to collaborations with other musicians\, Dove has made music for film\, dance\, theater\, poetry and visual/installation work. He has focused on acoustic playing for most of his career\, developing a style that draws influence from jazz\, 20th century composed music\, the electric guitar\, electronic music and European improvisation. He’s inspired by a wide range of influences from outside of his form\, including hardcore punk rock\, painting/visual arts\, modern/contemporary dance\, and Houston mixtape visionary DJ Screw. The influence of DJ Screw was the catalyst for more recent developments in Dove’s music. In an attempt assimilate the effect Screw’s extremely slow and low mixes (as a real time\, improvisational music)\, Dove extends the trombone with the use of guitar pedals\, pitch shifters\, and (most importantly) sub-woofers. Non-musical performative activity has also been explored in recent projects. Dove has collaborated with a wide range of local\, national and international creative musicians. He performs in both set groups and ad hoc ensembles\, as well as solo.\nwww.namelesssound.org\nhttps://elcangrejito.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:Love Witch
DESCRIPTION:A 2016 horror–thriller film\, written and directed by Anna Biller\, about a modern-day witch who uses spells and magic to get men to fall in love with her with disastrous results. Shot in Los Angeles and Eureka\, California\, it premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. In May 2016\, it was acquired for distribution at the Cannes Marché du Film by Oscilloscope Laboratories. The Love Witch was shot on 35mm film\, and printed from an original cut negative. The film has received positive reviews for its playful tribute to 1960s horror and Technicolor films\, combined with its serious inquiry into contemporary gender roles. \nWe will discuss this film in relation to the Larissa Hammond exhibit\, Initiation.

SUMMARY:Belladonna of Sadness
DESCRIPTION:One of the great lost masterpieces of Japanese animation\, never before officially released in the U.S.\, BELLADONNA OF SADNESS is a mad\, swirling\, psychedelic light-show of medieval tarot-card imagery with horned demons\, haunted forests and La Belle Dame Sans Merci with J.R.R. Tolkien influences. \nWe will be discussing this film\, the role witchcraft and superstition have played in gender roles throughout history\, all in relation to our exhibit Larissa Hammond: the/ a mind the b mind. \nThe last film in the Animerama trilogy produced by the godfather of Japanese anime & manga\, Osamu Tezuka and directed by his longtime collaborator Eiichi Yamamoto (ASTRO BOY and KIMBA THE WHITE LION)\, BELLADONNA unfolds as a series of spectacular still watercolor paintings that bleed and twist together. A young woman\, Jeanne (voiced by Aiko Nagayama) is assaulted by the local lord on her wedding night. To take revenge\, she makes a pact with the Devil himself (voiced by Tatsuya Nakadai\, from Akira Kurosawa’s RAN) who appears as a sprite and transforms her into a black-robed vision of madness and desire. \nExtremely transgressive\, BELLADONNA is fueled by a mind-blowing Japanese psych rock soundtrack by noted avant-garde jazz composer Masahiko Satoh. The film has been newly restored by Cinelicious Pics using the original 35 mm camera negative and sound elements and including over 8 minutes of surreal footage cut from the negative. On par with Rene Laloux’s FANTASTIC PLANET and Ralph Bakshi’s WIZARDS as an LSD-stoked 1970s head trip\, BELLADONNA marks a major rediscovery for animation fans. If Led Zeppelin had a favorite film\, this would be it. In other words\, Stairway to Hell.

SUMMARY:Danielle Graves:Days In
DESCRIPTION:We all grow up dreaming of what we want to be when we grow up\, I never wanted to be anything womanly. I was insecure\, insulted and in the footsteps of my brother—I wanted to be just like him. I wanted to be a dirty\, tree-whizzing-on boy\, but life has since changed. \nOver two years ago\, I drew my first saggy breasted and bumpy legged burger—this burger babe helped me love my body and be secure with the woman that I am and the woman that I am becoming. She\, amongst many other women I created\, was crafted by the words that make up today’s pop culture. 50 Cent once told us that “she’s beautiful\, she’s edible\,” Adam Levine\, amongst many other artists\, call us “sugar\,” “honey” and various other sweeteners or sweets\, Instagram gives us a lengthy thread of “#foodporn” posts\, while many other hot shots and online sites follow suit in dehumanizing and objectifying women. \nMy work personifies and reclaims these objectifications and has become a form of self-empowerment. It has shown me how to overcome and embrace the world and turn on the radiance that I never knew I had. It’s shown me the beauty in being a woman—the beauty in my mother—the beauty in the radical—the beauty in the breaking of preconceived femininity and the beauty of owning femininity. I want to celebrate my womanhood; thus\, I present to you a show of my girls just being girls\, Days In.
