SUMMARY:Respecting POTUS & the National Trust
DESCRIPTION:“Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers\, or newspapers without a government\, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.” \n“Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle.” \nBoth quotes are attributed to one of our founding fathers and third president\, Thomas Jefferson\, and they perfectly illustrate the vital\, acrimonious\, and sometimes outright hostile relationship that has always existed between a free press and the halls of power within a democracy. Traditionally the press\, this fourth estate\, has served as an additional check on the government’s power. In Jay Seawell’s project\, National Trust\, he dissects the “careful manufacturing of appearances in relation to power\, politics\, and media in the United States.” His subjects range from historical structures to political spectacles and media culture\, and they are all inextricably tied to superficial appearances and perceptions. Meanwhile\, in Andrew Miller’s project\, Respecting POTUS\, he explores these appearances and perceptions as they relate to the Office of the President both inside and outside of the Beltway. According to Miller\, “Political pundits\, elected representatives\, along with 24-hour cable news exist to hold those in power accountable but at times contribute to the divisive and hostile nature of our political culture today.” \nJay Turner Frey Seawell is a photographer based in Washington\, DC. He earned his MFA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago. His photographs have been included in numerous exhibitions in the United States as well as the Pingyao International Photography Festival in China. Seawell is a two-time nominee of The Baum Award for An Emerging American Photographer. His work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Photography and the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University. Seawell is the 2016 recipient of the Award for Innovation in the Documentary Arts from the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University. His first photobook National Trust was published by Skylark Editions. Seawell was a winner of the Magenta Foundation Flash Forward competition in 2018. \nAndrew “Drew” Miller is a Chicago-based fine art photographer specializing in interiors\, architecture\, and portraiture. His personal work explores the intersection of people and politics that is found in the urban environment. \nEfroymson Gallery\nTube Factory Artspace\n1125 Cruft Street Indianapolis\, IN 46203 \nOpening Reception November 1\, 6-10pm \nwww.auroraphoto.org\nwww.tubefactory.org\nwww.bigcar.org

SUMMARY:Jane Kim and Sean Smith: Far From Anything Like The Movie
DESCRIPTION:In February 2019 we flew to Madagascar in hopes to uncomfortably disconnect; It worked.  The Island of the Moon is home to around 200\,000 plant and animal species and has some of the most breathtaking scenery you could ever imagine. Unfortunately 90% of their rainforests are gone along with species uprooted due to deforestation. There’s a divide between the native Malagasy that belong and are acclimated to the pace of life in the island off the Indiana Ocean.  An abundance of ethnicities\, sex trafficking\, climate change\, extreme poverty\, and the longest humanly possible commute in a taxi brousse. \nFar From Anything Like The Movie is a photo/ mixed media exposé documenting the rode less traveled. Jane and Sean have no formal artist training and began this journey with the yearning to save their relationship.    \n\nThis will take place at Listen Hear located at 2620 Shelby St.

SUMMARY:MUFON featuring Thomas Wertman
DESCRIPTION:–Army Reserve Helicopters Encounter with the Unknown–\nRecent announcements indicate the Pentagon funded a program to identify unknown aerial threats between 2007-2012. Naval aviators encounter with UFOs in 2004 have been connected to the programs many areas of study. While of high interest\, have there been equal if not more interesting cases since this event.\nIn 1973 an Army Reserve helicopter was on what the crew assumed would be a non-eventful flight from Columbus to Cleveland\, Ohio. Little did they know they would have a close encounter with an object of unknown origin near Mansfield\, Ohio. The crew reported their encounter to their superiors who appeared to do nothing. But certain facts raise the question that their superiors knew more than they let on. Additional research and interviews with not only crew\, but ground witnesses who revealed previously unknown details.\nThe program interlaced with graphics in order to experience the event through the crew and ground witness’s perspective. \nAbout Thomas Wertman\nIt is said we are all products of our environment. Growing up in the 60’s and watching television shows such as The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits fueled an interest in space and the unknown. Television shows and movies soon led to books\, but unfortunately this interest had to be put aside to build a career\, raise a family\, and earn a bachelors in business and master’s in education.\nNow with my family grown and pursing their own careers I decided to return to my lifelong interest in the unknown. The first step was in 2008 by joining the Ohio based group the Cleveland Ufology Project (CUP). CUP was primarily a discussion group that provided an avenue to explore various areas associated with ufology. In 2018 I stepped down as co-director of the group in order to allow more time for private UFO research.\nThe second step also in 2008 was becoming a member of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). Since that time\, I have advanced from field investigator to State Director of Ohio. Currently have investigated over 300 cases in Ohio with one of the most interesting involving two fisherman who experienced over three and one-half hours of missing time. In addition to working Ohio cases I have also conducted over 230 investigations in Canada\, the United Kingdom\, and Puerto Rico for MUFONS Case Assistance Group.\nIf that was not enough\, I have participated in over 200 community outreach programs discussing UFO’s\, been a featured guest on radio and television shows\, participated in three documentaries\, played an alien in a short film\, and host a podcast called UFOdyssey.\nIn the back of my mind I’ve often wondered why I’m so passionate about ufology. A series of regressions explored my past in search of a possible connection. The regressions indicated personal encounters with UFOs and nonhuman beings beginning in the 1960s. These experiences if true explain that connection.

SUMMARY:Silent Horror Film & Live Score: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
DESCRIPTION:The last Lockerbie Night Market of the season will also feature an outdoor screening of the iconic silent horror film THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI with a LIVE SCORE brought to you by Classical Music Indy and Bad Boys of A.V. \nIn 1920\, one brilliant movie jolted the postwar masses and catapulted the movement known as German Expressionism into film history. That movie was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari\, a plunge into the mind of insanity that severs all ties with the rational world. Director Robert Wiene and a visionary team of designers crafted a nightmare realm in which light\, shadow and substance are abstracted\, a world in which a demented doctor and a carnival sleepwalker perpetrate a series of ghastly murders in a small community. \nAll ages // Free and open to the public. \nThanks to our friends at Sun King Brewery\, beer will also be available for purchase at the pop-up beer garden located right off the Cultural Trail on Alabama Street. We are also happy to announce that Ash & Elm Cider Co. will also be available. Purchase goods from local artists and food vendors while you take in this classic film with live music. \nA MUSICA FABULA event presented by Bad Boys of A.V. SUMMARY:Breakfast with Davy Rothbart
DESCRIPTION:In Indianapolis to promote his film at the Heartland Film festival\, 17 Blocks director and author Davy Rothbart will join us for breakfast and live on 99.1 WQRT with Anne Laker. \nAbout 17 Blocks \nIn 1999\, nine-year-old Emmanuel Sanford-Durant and his Washington\, D.C. family began to film their daily lives in America’s most dangerous neighborhood — just 17 blocks behind the U.S. Capitol building. They’ve been filming ever since. Made in a unique collaboration with filmmaker and journalist Davy Rothbart\, the film focuses on four generations of the Sanford Family\, including Emmanuel\, a promising student; his brother Smurf\, a local drug dealer; his sister Denice\, an aspiring cop; and his mother Cheryl\, who must conquer her own demons for her family to prosper. Spanning two decades\, “17 Blocks” illuminates a nation’s ongoing crisis through one family’s raw\, stirring\, and deeply personal saga \n\n\n 5:15 PM DeBoest Lecture Hall at Newfields \n\n\n\n\n\nFri\, Oct 18 7:20 PM AMC Castleton Square Theater 9 \n\n\n\nSat\, Oct 19 2:50 PM AMC Castleton Square Theater 9 \n\n\n\n\nSun\, Oct 20 2:30 PM DeBoest Lecture Hall at Newfields\n\nAbout Davy Rothbart\nDavid Ira “Davy” Rothbart is a bestselling author\, Emmy Award-winning filmmaker\, contributor to This American Life\, and the editor/publisher of Found Magazine.\n\nRothbart’s magazine Found is dedicated to discarded notes\, letters\, flyers\, photos\, lists\, and drawings found and sent in by readers. The magazine spawned a best-selling book\, Found: The Best Lost\, Tossed\, and Forgotten Items from Around the World\, published in April 2004. A second collection was published in May 2006\, a third in May 2009. The magazine is published annually and co-edited by Rothbart’s friend Sarah Locke.\n\n\nIn December 2006\, Geffen Records released Rothbart’s documentary film How We Survive about the punk rock band Rise Against on a DVD called Generation Lost. His second Rise Against documentary\, Another Station: Another Mile\, which follows the band as they write songs for a new album and perform shows around the world\, was released in October 2010\, and was among the year’s bestselling music DVDs in the U.S. and Germany. In May 2011\, Rothbart directed a behind-the-scenes featurette for ItGetsBetter.org about the making of Rise Against’s “Make It Stop” video\, which was nominated for a MTV Video Music Award. Rothbart and Rise Against lead singer Tim McIlrath are former roommates. \nIn the spring of 2008\, Easier With Practice\, a film based on an article Rothbart wrote for GQ about his life on tour\, was shot in Albuquerque\, New Mexico. The movie\, written and directed by Kyle Alvarez\, stars Brian Geraghty (The Hurt Locker; Boardwalk Empire) as Davy and Kel O’Neill as Davy’s brother; it premiered June 12\, 2009 at the CineVegas Film Festival and was awarded the Grand Jury Prize. A week later\, Easier With Practice premiered internationally at the Edinburgh Film Festival\, where it won the prize for Best Feature. In December 2009\, Easier With Practice was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards. The film was released in theaters in February 2010\, and met with great critical success: The Los Angeles Times called Easier With Practice “fresh\, flawless\, and totally captivating\,” and The Village Voice praised the film as “emotionally honest and achingly true.” \nIn January 2009\, Rothbart filmed his first full-length narrative feature\, Overhaul\, which stars rapper Daniel “D Shot” Garvatt as a pizza driver in desperate circumstances on New Year’s Eve. Rothbart himself delivered for Bell’s Pizza in Ann Arbor\, Michigan for six years. Overhaul was scheduled to be released in 2015. \nFrom late 2010 to spring of 2012\, Rothbart filmed a documentary called Medora\, which follows a resilient high-school basketball team in the small\, struggling town of Medora\, Indiana. The film\, co-directed by Rothbart and Andrew Cohn\, premiered at SXSW in 2013 [2] and was released in theaters in fall 2013\, receiving widespread praise from The New York Times\, The Village Voice\, NPR\, The Los Angeles Times\, and The Washington Post\, which named it one of the Best Films of 2013. Currently\, Medora holds a 92% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film aired in April\, 2014 on the acclaimed PBS series Independent Lens\, earning an Emmy Award. The documentary was produced by Beachside Films and Steve Buscemi\, Stanley Tucci\, and Wren Arthur of Olive Productions\, among others. \nRothbart is the subject of a documentary\, directed by David Meiklejohn\, called My Heart Is An Idiot\, which premiered in April 2011\, and screened in twenty U.S. cities that spring. He has also made token appearances as an actor\, including a role as Miami night club manager Jake Sylvano in the film The Strongest Man\, directed by Kenny Riches\, which premiered in January\, 2015 at the Sundance Film Festival.

SUMMARY:Lori Miles:Baptized In Sugar
DESCRIPTION:*This will be my first show in Indianapolis in ten years. \n*The show is called “Baptized in Sugar\,” and is a visual memoir of growing up in a house with a unique kind of privilege: we were saturated in unconditional love\, allowed boundless exercise of our own free will\, and we were always allowed to make any autonomous choice we wanted. \n*That kind of love makes the rest of the world\, forever\, pale in comparison. \n*My parents let my sisters and I spend an entire summer trying to dig our own swimming pool in the back yard (it ended up being nearly 3 feet deep and about 10 feet across\, lined with trash bags\, and required a constant stream of water from the hose just to rest in a mud pit). We could cook whatever we wanted\, but we never used recipes\, we just messed up the kitchen inventing horrible concoctions and baking them. I still do not know the actual rules to board games\, because in our house\, we could mix pieces between games\, make up our own rules\, and the winner was determined by democratic vote. \n*The show includes several sculptures (like a 14-foot tootsie pop called “Death Wish Summer”\, 2019)\, photographs\, videos\, paintings\, and one ceramic pig with a pink fur jacket (“You’re No Esau”\, 2019). \n*The experiences described are not quite factual\, but pulled from a combination of memories and impressions (some of my own and some I’m sure I borrowed- with three sisters\, you never really know. Some memories even turned out to be dreams (there was no clown painting on my bedroom wall as an infant\, but I recreated it for this show anyway). \n*In general\, my work does not concern itself with truth. The truth is just waiting to be proven wrong\, The world of the fake- copies\, replicas\, plastic tchochkes- these things know themselves to be false. Fake things can never be proven true\, and in that way\, they are the most honest things I know. \n*For instance\, I prefer plastic animals to real ones. In fact\, I have a famous distaste for real animals. They reek of the real world. A statue of an animal is neutral\, lovable\, permanent. I can project whatever I want onto it and it can handle the burden. \n*I don’t care about craft: it have no interest in impressing an audience with how good I am at something. The real challenge\, to me\, is to make my viewer care about something I didn’t make\, something that knowingly exhibits only a level of craft that could be achieved from a short youtube video. To that purpose\, much of the work that looks prefabricated is actually made and vis-versa. If they think “this is just a piece of paper stuck on a board\, they’ll actually come to realize it’s not paper at all\, but a painstaking layering of spray paint and gel markers on a board. \nAbout Lori Miles\nMiles is an associate professor of art and art history at DePauw University. Her work focuses on art making\, mostly dealing with cultural memes – especially looking at the gap between sculpture and contemporary controversies. She works at the intersection of traditional sculpture and use of online images for which copyright has expired. Online images inspire her sculpture and art. During summer 2015\, she was recipient of a faculty-student research grant through which she worked with students to merge traditional art with online images and other online research. \nThis exhibition is made possible by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and The Efroymson Family Fund. \nImage: Lori Miles\, “Pieta (Why Deny the Obvious Child)”\nDigital Print on panel\n2019\n30″x20″
