SUMMARY:Adrian Matejka-Presented by UIndy's Social Practice Art MA program and Etchings Press
DESCRIPTION:With the lean\, long jab and agile step of a boxer\, Adrian Matejka delivers this knockout dramatization of the larger-than-life life of heavyweight champion Jack Johnson. In dexterous interpolating voices\, and in forms ranging from enveloping sonnets to prose letters and interviews\, Johnson emerges as a scrappy\, hard-edged hero—troubled by his own demons but determined to win the “fight of the century\,” a fight that underscored the bitter realities of racism in America. These poems don’t pull no punches. \nPresented by UIndy’s Social Practice Art MA program and Etchings Press\, a student-run publisher. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nThe legendary Jack Johnson (1878–1946) was a true American creation. The child of emancipated slaves\, he overcame the violent segregationism of Jim Crow\, challenging white boxers—and white America—to become the first African-American heavyweight world champion. The Big Smoke\, Adrian Matejka’s third work of poetry\, follows the fighter’s journey from poverty to the most coveted title in sports through the multi-layered voices of Johnson and the white women he brazenly loved. Matejka’s book is part historic reclamation and part interrogation of Johnson’s complicated legacy\, one that often misremembers the magnetic man behind the myth. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nAdrian Matejka is the author of The Devil’s Garden (Alice James Books\, 2003) and Mixology (Penguin\, 2009). He is the recipient of two Illinois Arts Council Literary Awards\, a National Poetry Series Award\, the New York/New England Award\, and a fellowship from the Lannan Foundation. He teaches at Indiana University and lives in Bloomington with his wife\, Stacey Lynn Brown\, and their daughter.

SUMMARY:The Haiga Duo with Eric Salazar at Listen Hear
DESCRIPTION:ERIC HOLLANDER is a multidisciplinary artist in search of mind-opening concepts and better methods for the globalization of original ideas. With extensive exposure in classical viola repertoire (especially focused on 20th and 21st century performance practice)\, traditional Irish and Celtic music\, big band jazz\, ska\, funk\, and free improvisation\, Eric has found his way into a wide variety of ensemble\, composer-collaborative\, and creatively driven experiences. Most notably\, he has participated in the Midwest Fleadh Chiol (1st place)\, the Massachusetts 2014 ASTA competition (2nd place)\, The Bowdoin International Music Festival\, Gamper New Music Festival\, and The Lucerne Festival Academy. Besides his musical adventures\, Eric is deeply involved in poetry writing and works as the editor-in-chief of Crook & Folly literary magazine. Eric received his BM in viola performance from the Boston Conservatory in 2014 and an MA in writing and publishing from DePaul University in Chicago\, Illinois in 2015. Recently\, Eric has been working extensively with keyboard artist\, Jason Chen – whose positive collaboration\, enthusiasm\, and psychological tolerance he considers to be absolutely unparalleled. \nSince his move to Chicago in summer 2015\, JASON CHEN has been present primarily as a recent graduate in piano performance from a neighboring university and a freelance accompanist to the performance circle – despite his occasional reluctance. A peculiar tendency to indulge in any activity that would potentially prevent him from practicing the piano has recently brought him to the unexplored territory of playing other types of keyboard instruments\, specifically the accordion and melodica. Jason works extensively with Eric Hollander\, whom he considers one of the most politically incorrect\, lucid and sincere violists and chamber music partners he has known thus far.

SUMMARY:Brick Street South Poetry Series: Sue Swartz
DESCRIPTION:Brick Street South Poetry Series features a poet and an open mic the third Thursday of every month.  June’s featured poet is Sue Swartz. \nSwartz is community organizer by training\, born and bred in New York\, and now lives happily in Bloomington\, Indiana. \n“Words. I’ve got a million of them. Some have been published by Ben Yehuda Press in We Who Desire. The poems in this volume use the text of the Torah (aka the 5 Books of Moses) as a starting point to explore themes of belief\, covenant\, liberation\, choice\, and yes — desire. \nIf you want a taste of what I have to say… here tis (below). I’m available for readings as well as teaching both adults & kids about the process of midrash/commentary-making.” \n\nON THE EIGHTH DAY \nAaron’s sons Nadav & Avihu offered before God strange fire \nthat had not been commanded— \n\nOn the eighth day\, Alessandro Volta \nput metal coins on his tongue \nand prophesied sulfurous electricity. \nOn the eighth day\, Leucippus \nconsidered the true nature of the void\, \nTeller the true capacity of the sun. \nCurie was entranced by radium\, \nand Maxwell by luminous radiations. \nOn the eighth day\, there were isotopes\, \ncloud chambers\, alpha rays. \nLife was vaporized in a simple test \nof hydrogen. On that day outside \nplanned creation\, God peered \ninto the universe and was afraid for us— \nNoisy children snapping berries \noff a poisonous bush\, racing \ndown the street with pointy twigs— \n\nDidn’t I tell you to knock that off? \n\nAnd burned to the nub two sons of priestly \ninheritance. Before the whole assembly \nwere they offered up\, a soothing savor. \nObject lesson: this may you burn \nin your copper pan\, of this sinew and thigh \nmay you eat. But this intoxicating notion\, \nthis 4-legged swarming-thing— \nIt is polluted meat. Strange fire. \n\nYour blowtorch future. \n–Sue Swartz \n\nFree admission and parking. Beer and wine for purchase.

SUMMARY:Outdoor Movie Series-Raging Bull
DESCRIPTION:Join us in an outdoor screening and discussion of Raging Bull and how it relates to our Carlos Rolón/Dzine:50 GRAND exhibit. \n“It’s the movie that won Robert De Niro his Oscar for Best Actor. It’s the movie that earned Martin Scorsese his first nomination for Best Director. It’s the movie where the guy who would later play Coach on Cheers sees a handsome boxer get mutilated and says\, “He ain’t pretty no more.” It’s Raging Bull\, it came out 37 years ago this year\, and it will punch you in the face. Here are 5 facts to enhance your next viewing of one of the best sports dramas ever made. \n1. IT PARTIALLY OWES ITS EXISTENCE TO ROCKY.\nComparisons to that other Oscar-winning boxing movie from four years earlier were inevitable\, but the two were actually connected. Rocky was produced by Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff\, and released by United Artists. When those same producers approached that same studio about doing another boxing movie\, the studio said\, “A sequel to Rocky? Sure!” That wasn’t what they had in mind (though they did soon enough)\, but in the meantime\, Rocky’s huge success was enough to sell UA on another boxing movie. \n2. IT WAS ONE OF SEVERAL BOXING MOVIES BEING SHOT AROUND THE SAME TIME.\nRocky started a trend\, as movies that win Best Picture often do. In late 1978 and early 1979\, when Scorsese was getting started on Raging Bull\, there were at least four others in the works: Rocky II\, The Main Event\, The Champ\, and Matilda (the boxing kangaroo). This glut actually helped Scorsese convince United Artists to let him shoot Raging Bull in black-and-white\, as it would make his boxing movie stand out visually from the others. Hey\, whatever works\, right? \n3. FOR RESEARCH\, SCREENWRITER MARDIK MARTIN LIVED WITH JAKE LAMOTTA’S EX-WIFE FOR A FEW DAYS.\n“Lived with” is how he phrased it on the 30th anniversary Blu-ray. Vickie LaMotta was open enough to the idea of a movie about her ex-husband that she let Martin visit her in Florida and pick her brain about her relationship with the volatile pugilist. \n4. DE NIRO WANTED TO DO IT AS A PLAY\, TOO.\nThis was in early 1978\, before it was even written as a movie yet\, when De Niro was collaborating with Mardik Martin to adapt LaMotta’s memoir\, while simultaneously trying to convince a noncommittal and increasingly drug-addled Scorsese to take on the project. De Niro’s idea was to stage it as a Broadway play (to be directed by Scorsese)\, and then\, during the run of the show\, spend the daylight hours shooting the movie. De Niro liked the idea of the day’s filming influencing the way they performed the play that night. But Martin’s script wasn’t yet ready for either medium\, and Scorsese was in no shape to do it then anyway. \n5. PAUL SCHRADER FIXED THE SCREENPLAY BY ADDING JAKE LAMOTTA’S BROTHER\, JOEY.\nIt’s strange to imagine Raging Bull without the Joe Pesci character\, but that’s how Mardik Martin’s first drafts had it. He was adapting LaMotta’s 1970 memoir\, Raging Bull: My Story\, co-authored by LaMotta’s lifelong friend Peter Savage (born Peter Petrella). The book didn’t feature Joey as a prominent character\, and it had Savage doing most of the things that Joey would eventually do in the movie. When Schrader was hired to build on the work Martin had done and take another stab at the screenplay\, he decided the story would be more compelling if it involved brothers rather than friends (blood ties and all that)\, so he introduced the Joey character and excised poor old Pete. This creative license proved problematic later\, when Joey LaMotta sued for defamation because the movie had attributed to him a number of unwholesome deeds (like beating the crap out of a neighborhood mobster) that had actually been perpetrated by Savage. “– Eric D Snider via Mental Floss \nDue to violence and language this film is probably best for mature 13-14+.

SUMMARY:The Fits
DESCRIPTION:The Fits\, an independent film that premiered to rapturous praise at Sundance last January and received a theatrical release in the summer\, isn’t technically a boxing picture. Or perhaps it’s more accurate to say that it’s not just a boxing picture. Director Anna Rose Holmer has described it as a dance film. It’s also about mass hysteria in close-knit groups of adolescent women in the tradition of Picnic At Hanging Rock and The Falling (yes\, that is an actual subgenre of films). But boxing is a part of the world that it portrays\, and the way that Holmer\, her co-writers\, her choreographers\, and her brilliant young stars work with the sport is exciting and refreshing.–Vice \nAfter the screening we will discuss the film in relation to the Carlos Rolón: 50 GRAND exhibit.

SUMMARY:Carlos Rolón: 50 GRAND
DESCRIPTION:Photo: My Father’s Wishes No. 1\, 2014\, Wallpaper\, wood\, mirror\, 24kt gold leaf\, gold plated chains\, quartz crystals\, metal\, sunglasses and bronzed boxing gloves\nBefore language to Hemingway\, from the ancient Sumerians to the Greeks to the modern day\, there was the sport of boxing. With his exhibit 50 Grand\, Chicago-based artist Carlos Rolón/Dzine will present a dually charged exploration of boxing and domestic culture\, inspired by the tactility and performative qualities of boxing\, and its relationship to contemporary art at Tube Factory artspace\, 1125 Cruft St. Though the third iteration of the exhibit\, it will features a newly commissioned performative installation of live sanctioned Golden Gloves fights\, organized by Indy Boxing and Grappling and sponsored by Top Rank Productions. The exhibit is a nod to Ernest Hemmingway’s 50 Grand\, and like the story explores the relationship between courage and professionalism. \nWith this exhibit\, Rolón continues to mine his childhood memories. He invites the viewer to step into intimate scenes such as his family’s wood-paneled basement\, decorated with gold garlands and vintage beer placards\, where his father would watch prize fights like Roberto Durán V. Sugar Ray Leonard\, also known as the No Más Fight. This fight was particularly important for Rolon growing up as it allowed him to sit for short periods of time connecting with his father. \nRolón monumentalizes his blue-collar trophy den as the setting for his exhibition\, creating an homage not only to boxing culture\, but also to Puerto Rican immigration to America. \nWithin the exhibition is a newly commissioned performative installation of live Golden Glove fights organized by Indy Boxing and Grappling scheduled  June 2 and July 7\, 7-9 p.m. Fighters will wear robes designed by Rolón on each of the three scheduled fights then on display when the ring is inactive. \nWithin the main gallery is an installation of paintings and sculptural fabric works exuberant with color\, texture\, patterns\, and experiments in surface that create a visual dialogue between the physical charge of boxing\, the garments worn by the fighters\, and the artist’s own childhood home and upbringing as a first generation immigrant. Occupying the den is a series of custom-made trophies entitled Immigrants/Emigrants (Symbols and Mementos for the Nuyoricans) created\, as the artist states “for people like my father and mother who came to the U.S for a better life with dreams and aspirations that never quite materialized\, but still achieved success in other aspects of their life.” \nThe exhibit runs through July 22 open Monday-Friday 9 am-6 pm\, Saturdays 11-3 with extended evening hours every first Friday. \nMade possible by the Herbert Simon Family Fund\, Top Rank Productions\, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and Sun King Brewery \nAbout Carlos Rolón/Dzine (b. 1970\, Chicago\, IL) \nRolón attended Columbia College Chicago with a concentration in painting and drawing. Rolón has been recognized for his elaborately crafted paintings\, ornate sculptures and works that come out of American\, Latino and uniquely based subcultures. His studio practice investigates pop culture\, craft\, ritual\, beauty and its relationship to art history\, subculture\, appropriation and the institution. As a first-generation immigrant of Puerto Rican decent\, the artist creates objects questioning the concept of luxury and craft making to explore questions of identity\, integration and aspiration. His work also represents a detailed examination of curiosity and the process of art making and the cultures surrounding this. The work often addresses his biography by melding memory and the imaginary with carefully crafted\, hybrid works that are playfully situated between the contradictory worlds of conspicuous consumption and urban artifact. The work is at once melancholic\, excessive and exuberant\, poised somewhere between celebration and regret. Rolón illuminates how the masculine can become delicate and the how the baroque can be minimal. The artist often channels this approach with site-specific installation work\, vivid large-scale paintings and ornate sculptures in various materials expanding on ideas of self-reflection and imagined luxury. The works ultimately produce a hybrid language of social practice\, painting and sculpture inviting the viewer to engage in discourse and discussion.\nRolón has had solo exhibitions at The Dallas Contemporary\, Dallas; Bass Museum of Art\, Miami; Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art\, Gateshead\, UK; Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico\, San Juan\, Puerto Rico; and CAM Contemporary Art Museum\, St. Louis. His work has also been exhibited in group shows at The Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago; Marta Herford Museum\, Herford\, Germany; Museum Het Domein\, Sittard\, The Netherlands; Museum of Contemporary Art\, San Diego; Museo del Barrio\, New York and Centro Atlantico de Arte Moderno (CAAM)\, Canary Islands; Oakland University Art Gallery\, Michigan and Museo de Arte de Ponce\, Puerto Rico.\nIn 2007 Rolón represented Ukraine in the 52nd Venice Biennale. He is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation award for Painting and Sculpture. Rolón’s work is included in the following public collections: Bass Museum of Art\, Miami; Brooklyn Museum\, New York; City of Chicago Public Art Collection; Deagu Art Museum\, Deagu; Museo del Barrio\, New York; Museo de Arte de Ponce\, Puerto Rico; Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico\, San Juan; Museum Het Domein\, Sittard\, The Netherlands; Museum of Contemporary Art\, San Diego; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art\, Kansas City; and Pinchuk Art Centre\, Kiev\, Ukraine\, among others. \nAbout Tube Factory artspace: Tube Factory is a 12\,000 square foot museum space curated based upon the themes of community\, place\, memory and mythology.
