SUMMARY:Love Witch
DESCRIPTION:A 2016 horror–thriller film\, written and directed by Anna Biller\, about a modern-day witch who uses spells and magic to get men to fall in love with her with disastrous results. Shot in Los Angeles and Eureka\, California\, it premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. In May 2016\, it was acquired for distribution at the Cannes Marché du Film by Oscilloscope Laboratories. The Love Witch was shot on 35mm film\, and printed from an original cut negative. The film has received positive reviews for its playful tribute to 1960s horror and Technicolor films\, combined with its serious inquiry into contemporary gender roles. \nWe will discuss this film in relation to the Larissa Hammond exhibit\, Initiation.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of experimental compositions at the Tube Factory Artspace. Three sonic wizards come to town to perform solo sets of electroacoustic music. This will be a great evening show you don’t want to miss! \nDave Dove (TX)\nKeneen Lawler (KY)\nJohn Krausbauer (CA) \nKeenan Lawler is a Louisville Kentucky based musician\, sound artist\, improviser and composer. For nearly thirty years he has been a restless explorer of sound. Lawler’s music can be found on such labels as Important\,Tompkins Square\, New American Folk Hero\, Music Fellowship\, Rebis\, Eclipse and Table of the Elements who released the acclaimed\,”Music for the Bluegrass States”. He performs live regularly and has participated in such festivals as High Zero\, Fantastic Voyagers\, Avantronics\, Time of Rivers\, Nutstock\,Greetings Fellow Pickers\,Transmissions\,Terrastock 7\, Wintervoid2\, Table of the Elements Bohrium\, Boomslang\, Louisville Experimental Fest and New Music for Early Instruments. \nhttps://m.soundcloud.com/r-keenan-lawler \n**************************************************************\nJohn Krausbauer is a music maker currently living in Los Angeles. He will be performing an extended-durational piece for amplified violin\, voice and synth\, utilizing high volumes\, just tunings and stroboscopic lighting\, to create an immersive experiential sound environment.\nKrausbauer has performed his music in a multitude of settings – from basements and rock clubs to colleges and art galleries. Numerous recordings of his work have been released on independent labels in both the US and Europe. In recent years his focus has been on his solo work\, involving ritual endurance happenings with voice and violin\, accompanied by synth and strobes; his compositions\, mainly concerned with systems-based phasing constructions; the Ecstatic Music Band\, exploring just tunings with amplified strings at high volumes and long durations\, with stroboscopic lighting; The Essentialists\, a country-blues-boogie-raga guitar/violin duo; and most recently the formation of the “M”inimalist psych-punk group\, Night Collectors.\nTrance-Psychedelia is the aim and goal. \nhttps://debaclerecords.bandcamp.com/album/blues-for-the-grave \n**************************************************************\nDavid Dove (Houston\, Texas)\nA trombone player\, composer\, improviser\, and educator\, David Dove has given performances and workshops across North America and internationally. As Founding Director of Nameless Sound (a non-profit organization in Houston\, Texas)\, he curates/presents a concert series of international contemporary creative music\, and has developed an approach\, philosophy and practice of creative music education based on creativity and improvisation. Dove has written on music pedagogy\, including a chapter titled “The Music is the Pedagogy” that has been published in the collection “Beyond the Classroom” (Routledge). Dove’s early musical background ranged from studies in jazz and symphonic music\, to punk rock bands. As a creative artist\, free improvisation has been his primary (but not exclusive) approach to performance and collaboration. In addition to collaborations with other musicians\, Dove has made music for film\, dance\, theater\, poetry and visual/installation work. He has focused on acoustic playing for most of his career\, developing a style that draws influence from jazz\, 20th century composed music\, the electric guitar\, electronic music and European improvisation. He’s inspired by a wide range of influences from outside of his form\, including hardcore punk rock\, painting/visual arts\, modern/contemporary dance\, and Houston mixtape visionary DJ Screw. The influence of DJ Screw was the catalyst for more recent developments in Dove’s music. In an attempt assimilate the effect Screw’s extremely slow and low mixes (as a real time\, improvisational music)\, Dove extends the trombone with the use of guitar pedals\, pitch shifters\, and (most importantly) sub-woofers. Non-musical performative activity has also been explored in recent projects. Dove has collaborated with a wide range of local\, national and international creative musicians. He performs in both set groups and ad hoc ensembles\, as well as solo.\nwww.namelesssound.org\nhttps://elcangrejito.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:Exhibitions Book Club-Ariana Reines
DESCRIPTION:Leading up to each exhibition at Tube Factory\, we will host a monthly discussion about books releated to the exhibits we are hosting. For the August 4\, 2017 exhibit\, Initiation by Larissa Hammond and poet Ariana Reines\, we will read and discuss Reines book\, Mercury. Drinks will be provided. Please RSVP to email hidden; JavaScript is required \nBorn in Salem\, Massachusetts\, poet\, playwright\, and translator Ariana Reines earned a BA from Barnard College\, and completed graduate work at both Columbia University and the European Graduate School\, where she studied literature\, performance\, and philosophy. Her books of poetry include The Cow (2006)\, which won the Alberta Prize from Fence Books; Coeur de Lion (2007); and Mercury (2011). Her poems have been anthologized in Against Expression (2011) and Gurlesque (2010). Known for her interest in bodily experience\, the occult\, new media\, and the possibilities of the long or book-length form\, Reines has been described as “one of the crucial voices of her generation” by Michael Silverblatt on NPR’s Bookworm. At once personal\, Romantic\, slippery\, and extreme\, Reines’s poetry investigates and overturns lyric conventions. Of her own work\, she admitted in an interview with HTML Giant: “My best writing seems to have to be forced from me by some other force but that force has to be one whose power I agree to serve.” \nReines’s first play Telephone (2009) was performed at the Cherry Lane Theater and received two Obie Awards. A re-imagining of its second act was featured as part of the Guggenheim’s Works+Process series in 2009\, and the script was published in Play: A Journal of Plays in 2010. Reines’s translations include a version of Baudelaire’s My Heart Laid Bare (2009); Jean-Luc Hennig’s The Little Black Book of Grisélidis Réal: Days and Nights of an Anarchist Whore(2009); and Tiqqun’s Preliminary Materials Toward a Theory of the Young-Girl (2012). \nReines has taught at Columbia University and the European Graduate School\, and was the Roberta C. Holloway Lecturer in Poetry at the University of California-Berkeley in 2009\, the youngest poet to ever hold that position. She has traveled to Haiti multiple times as part of the on-going relief efforts there.—Poetry Foundation

SUMMARY:Larissa Hammond: the / a mind the b mind
DESCRIPTION:the/a mind the b mind\, is a fully commissioned exhibit featuring four large scale paintings\, one in collaboration with poet Ariana Reines. \nThe exhibit is several years in the making. “Through the years this show has evolved\, my body has been attacking itself through my immune system\,” says Hammond. “I went down many paths with both my art and physical body before I finally reached a turning point.” \nThe paintings happened after a series of conversations with Reines. “We spoke about the silence women carry\, what it really means and feels like to give consent\, communications that result from being mixed race and culture in America\, the importance of ownership and protection over one’s own body\, taking care\, how crucial it is to identify as sane\, and the importance of relating to other people with love and humor as a way through any kind of opposition\,” says Hammond. \nThe paintings themselves are an exploration in communication using a collective unconscious that Hammond built through her writings alongside conversations with Reines. “This collective unconscious is a combination of my matrilineal cultural heritage (Afro-Caribbean)\, past experiences\, and direct feedback from my body as I recovered from a brain injury\,” says Hammond. \nBorn in Indianapolis\, IN\, Larissa Hammond studied Architecture and Linguistics at the University of Cincinnati before earning her BA from Portland State University. In 2012\, Hammond earned her MFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art + Oregon College of Art & Craft. Since graduating\, her thesis was purchased by conceptual artist Luis Camnitzer and she was named by Modern Painters Magazine as 1 of 25 Artists to Watch. Her first solo edition\, THE REDDENING\, was featured by Monograph Bookwerks and Triangular Press at the Codex International and LA Art Book Fairs. THE REDDENING was also purchased by the University of Iowa\, Indiana University\, and Oregon College of Art & Craft Rare / Artist Book Collections. \nBorn in Salem\, Massachusetts\, poet\, playwright\, and translator Ariana Reines earned a BA from Barnard College\, and completed graduate work at both Columbia University and the European Graduate School\, where she studied literature\, performance\, and philosophy. Her books of poetry include The Cow (2006)\, which won the Alberta Prize from Fence Books; Coeur de Lion (2007); and Mercury (2011). Known for her interest in bodily experience\, the occult\, new media\, and the possibilities of the long or book-length form\, Reines has been described as “one of the crucial voices of her generation” by Michael Silverblatt on NPR’s Bookworm. \nMade possible by the Herbert Simon Family Foundation and Sun King Brewery.

SUMMARY:TWIN PEAKS
DESCRIPTION:Ally Alsup\, Philip Campbell\, Justin Cooper\, Alice Guerin\, Grant Lewandowski\, Terrance Majors\, Kayla Pappas\, Paul Pelsue\, Robert Young and Natalie Woodlock \n\n\n \n\n\nTen artists created works inspired by the TV series\, Twin Peaks\, which reshaped popular culture and the arts worldwide. The series combined the underbelly of human nature with an artist’s aesthetic\, forever changing the mainstream’s appetite for visual entertainment. \n\n\nThe Atlantic put it best\, “Without Twin Peaks\, and its big-bang expansion of the possibilities of television\, half your favorite shows wouldn’t exist. The absorptive\, all-in serial\, sonically and visually entire\, novelistically cantilevered with deep structure and extending backwards into the viewer’s brain\, was simply not a thing before Lynch and Frost. With Twin Peaks they effectively renegotiated TV’s contract with its audience. You didn’t tune in to this show the same way that you tuned in to L.A. Law or Murder\, She Wrote. You tuned in psychedelically\, as it were\, ready to be transported. You were in\, or you were out: a binary decision. The story arcs\, the curves of character development\, were long\, longer than the show itself\, receding into mystery. If you missed an episode\, you were disoriented. If you watched every episode carefully\, you might still be disoriented. Remarkably\, this has become something like the norm.”\n\n\nAnd as promised\, 25 years later a new series continuing the experience re-appeared this spring on Showtime. \n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\nOn display in the Jeremy Efroymson Gallery\, August 4-September 23\n\nClick here to read the rest of the Atlantic Story. \nImage: Natalie Woodlock\, Audrey Horne\, three-color hand-pulled screen print.

SUMMARY:Brick Street South Poetry Series: Abegunde
DESCRIPTION:Abegunde is a Memory Keeper\, ancestral priest in the Yoruba Orisa tradition\, and a Reiki Master with a focus on the recovery and healing of ancestral memory from the Earth and human body. She chooses to forget that words and days have limits. Instead\, she chooses to remember – and live by – the words of a young Black woman in the 5th grade: Poetry can change the world.  As a result\, she spends her days and dreamtime chanting silenced memories into spoken histories. On the weekdays\, when she isn’t birthing new words out of sound and images\, she shapeshifts into a professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies and the founding director of The Graduate Mentoring Center at Indiana University. Her ongoing research and subsequent creations help us understand how unresolved ancestral emotions shape the lives of descendants of the Middle Passage and the links between ancestral wounding\, contemporary violence\, and illness and disease. She will read from her work-in-progress Learning to Eat the Dead: Juba\, USA\, a meditation on visiting Juba\, South Sudan\, living in the United States\, and poetic transparency. \nBrick Street South Poetry Series features a poet and an open mic the third Thursday of every month.  Free admission and parking. Beer and wine for purchase.

SUMMARY:Adrian Matejka-Presented by UIndy's Social Practice Art MA program and Etchings Press
DESCRIPTION:With the lean\, long jab and agile step of a boxer\, Adrian Matejka delivers this knockout dramatization of the larger-than-life life of heavyweight champion Jack Johnson. In dexterous interpolating voices\, and in forms ranging from enveloping sonnets to prose letters and interviews\, Johnson emerges as a scrappy\, hard-edged hero—troubled by his own demons but determined to win the “fight of the century\,” a fight that underscored the bitter realities of racism in America. These poems don’t pull no punches. \nPresented by UIndy’s Social Practice Art MA program and Etchings Press\, a student-run publisher. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nThe legendary Jack Johnson (1878–1946) was a true American creation. The child of emancipated slaves\, he overcame the violent segregationism of Jim Crow\, challenging white boxers—and white America—to become the first African-American heavyweight world champion. The Big Smoke\, Adrian Matejka’s third work of poetry\, follows the fighter’s journey from poverty to the most coveted title in sports through the multi-layered voices of Johnson and the white women he brazenly loved. Matejka’s book is part historic reclamation and part interrogation of Johnson’s complicated legacy\, one that often misremembers the magnetic man behind the myth. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nAdrian Matejka is the author of The Devil’s Garden (Alice James Books\, 2003) and Mixology (Penguin\, 2009). He is the recipient of two Illinois Arts Council Literary Awards\, a National Poetry Series Award\, the New York/New England Award\, and a fellowship from the Lannan Foundation. He teaches at Indiana University and lives in Bloomington with his wife\, Stacey Lynn Brown\, and their daughter.
