SUMMARY:Drums & Drones + Ursula Scherrer
DESCRIPTION:Drums & Drones is a sound and light performative installation featuring drummer Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and video artist Ursula Scherrer. \nSonically\, the aim of the project is to investigate the subtle acoustic properties of drum resonance. From these subtleties\, expansive meditative soundscapes are created. Similarly\, the visual component examines elements of found forms\, whether in filmed objects or light itself. This sense of architectural abstraction functions to liberate natural aesthetic beauty from associative identity. \n\nBiographies \nBrian Chase is a drummer and composer living in Brooklyn. His diverse range of work/play includes that with rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs\, the community of the New York improvised/experimental music scene\, and Drums & Drones\, an electro-acoustic project focusing on the application of just intonation to drums and percussion. Performances have taken him across the world\, and he appears on many recordings spanning a broad spectrum of styles. In addition to the drums\, Brian is a regular practitioner of Ashtanga yoga. chasebrian.com and chaikinrecords.com  \nThe poetic quality of Ursula Scherrer’s work reminds one of moving paintings\, drawing the viewer into the images\, leaving them with their own stories. She transforms spaces and landscapes into serene\, abstract portraits of rhythm\, color and light – inner landscapes in the outside world where the images and actions have less to do with what we see then with the feeling they leave behind. Scherrer is a Swiss artist living in New York. Her work and collaboration with composers\, choreographers\, stage directors\, light artists and poets has been shown in festivals\, galleries and museums internationally.

SUMMARY:Taking Israel
DESCRIPTION:Big Car Collaborative will present a screening and discussion of the award winning documentary TAKING ISRAEL. The 55 minute film recounts the experiences of African-American students who went to Israel over a fifteen year period -1988-2002.  The students from Wilberforce University in Ohio spent summers in Israel working at Kibbutz Ramat Menashe\, conducting an English summer fun camp ( Kafiada) in the TelAviv suburb  Holon and taking classes at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.  The students also spent time at the Givat Haviva Center of Peace interacting with Israeli Arabs and Palestinians.  Dr Eric Winston retired Vice President at Wilberforce University and Kelly Brewer a former program participant will lead a discussion after the film.  \n\nThe film’s focus is the cultural interactions between the students and the Israeli’s with whom they came in contact.  I addition to cultural understanding the film allowed the students to observe the educational\, social and political environment of Israel as African Americans.  The program was the outgrowth of a suggestion by Dr Stanley Borenstein\, a former Wilberforce Professor who suggested that the University create the “exchange” program as way for the students to satisfy an academic requirement. \nThe documentary was funded in part by the Efroymson Foundation of Indianapolis and Gofundme. \n\nDr Eric Winston is a retired Vice President at Wilberforce University and Kelly Brewer a former program participant will lead a discussion after the conclusion. \nTaking Israel was produced by Dr. Winston and Directed by Vincent Singleton and has won three awards–Best Documentary at the San Diego Black Film Festival and the Best Documentary and Best Director at the Action on Film Festival\, Monrovia\,CA.

SUMMARY:99.1 WQRT's Rhinestone Country Presents Alex Williams
DESCRIPTION:Alex Williams is a part of a neo-traditionalist country music that surfaced in the wake of Jamey Johnson‘s success in the early 2010s. Like Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson\, Williamsuses the outlaw country of the ’70s as a primary text\, finding his own voice within the music of Nashville renegades like Waylon Jennings and Texas mavericks like Jerry Jeff Walker — a skill that’s apparent on his 2017 debut Better Than Myself. \nA native of Pendleton\, Indiana\, Williams grew up listening to ’80s metal\, eventually gravitating toward classic country when he was in his late teens. He enrolled in Nashville’s Belmont University after graduating from high school\, but he soon dropped out of college and began gigging in the Music City\, sometimes drifting back to his home state of Indiana\, sometimes getting down to Texas. Williams wound up leading his own band and their constant gigging brought them to the attention of Julian Raymond\, a producer who also worked A&R at Big Machine Records. He signed Williams separately from the band\, taking him into the studio with a star-studded backing band that included J.T. Corenflos\, Matt Rollings\, and Victor Indrizzo to record his debut album. The resulting Better Than Myself was released in August 2017. (source: allmusic.com- written by Stephen Thomas Erlewine)

SUMMARY:99.1 WQRT's Rhinestone Country Presents Mike & The Moonpies
DESCRIPTION:On-stage and on record\, Austin’s Mike and the Moonpies keep the torch of Texas country burning. Whether it’s a hardcore two-step\, freewheeling Western swing\, Doug Sahm‘s Cosmic American Music\, or George Strait‘s sweet\, burnished ballads\, Mike and the Moonpies tap into the traditions of the Lone Star State\, yet their music feels nimble and fresh thanks to their deft interplay and sly touch. \nA nascent version of Mike and the Moonpies premiered in 2008\, with guitarist Catlin Rutherford leading a variety of musicians through a Monday night residency at the Hole in the Wall\, a dive on the University of Texas drag. Toward 2010\, the band solidified around Rutherford\, vocalist Mike Harmeier\, steel guitarist Zach Moulton\, drummer Kyle Ponder\, and bassist Preston Rhone\, with this lineup releasing the independent The Real Country that year. Pianist John Carbone joined in 2011 and the band claimed the East Side venue the White Horse as its new Austin haunt. The following year found the band releasing its second album\, The Hard Way. \nAfter the release of The Hard Way\, Mike and the Moonpiescontinued to tour regularly\, expanding to the rest of Texas. The group’s third album\, 2015’s Mockingbird\, began to earn the group attention outside of Texas. After delivering a double live album called Live at WinStar World Casino & Resort in 2016\, the group returned in early 2018 with its fourth studio album\, Steak Night at the Prairie Rose. SUMMARY:The Immigrant Yarn Project-KnitNight
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to be part of a nation-wide community art project? \nHundreds of artist / knitter / activists from around the country are collaborating in a single\, magnificent gesture of unity\, solidarity\, and yarn-based creativity in a celebration of our nation’s glorious diversity. Organized nationally by Enactivist\, a San Francisco-based 501(c)(3)\, the project is brought to Indianapolis by Mary Jo Bayliss. There is no cost at all to be part of this project and it is a purely democratic (by the people) and colossal work of public art\, representing a cross section of the American experience. We think it’s time to rise above division and come together to celebrate what we all have in common – citizenry in a nation composed of diverse backgrounds\, families\, politics\, faiths\, identities and ideas. \nCountless small squares and pieces have come into the studio\, and more knitted by immigrants and their descendants arrive everyday. From high schools to retirement centers\, from California to Maine\, we have collected these works of art\, representing a personal or familial story. The pieces are compiled\, sewn together and fashioned into over 100 sculptural columns\, in a single colossal work of yarn-based art. First displayed at Fort Point National Historic Site\, at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco in May 2019\, and then in locations throughout the USA\, the Immigrant Yarn Project will provide a testament to the creative spirit of our shared immigrant heritage. It is a celebration of our national gestalt\, where the whole is different and as magnificent as the sum of its parts. \nSee https://enactivist.org/ to learn more about the organization behind this nationwide public art project.

SUMMARY:Landscape in the Mist
DESCRIPTION:“Landscape in the Mist\,” the final chapter in Angelopoulos’ ‘Trilogy of Silence’\, was both a political film and a personal one. This mesmerizing\, heartbreaking and hauntingly beautiful allegorical tale was a poignant portrait of the perennial yet futile search for identity and a compassionate father figure by the people of Greece\, a country tormented along the better part of 20th century by political turbulence and disillusionment. The story chronicles the journey of two kids – Voula (Tania Palaiologou)\, a prepubescent girl\, and her little brother Alexandros (Michalis Zeke) – in search of their father who\, they believe\, is residing in Germany. For Theo the destination was far less important vis-à-vis the incredible leap of faith that these two kids take with hope as their sole driving force. Along the road they face moments of gut-wrenching tragedy\, as when Voula is callously violated by a truck driver\, as well as simple joy\, as in their motorbike ride with a young\, lonely actor named Orestes (Stratos Tzortzoglou)\, and profound catharsis\, as when Voula\, who had been maintaining an impassive demeanour till then\, finally breaks down in the arms of the young guy. The film was\, therefore\, also a fascinating coming-of-age tale – a personal one for the kids\, and a political one for the rootless\, disenchanted generation they symbolized. Washed-out vistas of Greek countryside\, marvelous long takes\, and the evocative score\, laced the layered\, lyrical storyline with pathos and melancholia\, as did the devastatingly brilliant turn by the young Tania. Interestingly\, the theatre troupe of The Travelling Players made a brief return in it\, perhaps signifying the inherently cyclical nature of both life and history. \nRated R\n2 hours 17 minutes\nRelease date: September 14\, 1990 (New York City)\nDirector: Theo Angelopoulos\nMusic composed by: Eleni Karaindrou\nCinematography: Giorgos Arvanitis \nFree\, discussion will follow.

SUMMARY:Red Line Movie Night-My Neighbor Totoro
DESCRIPTION:The Red Line is coming to South Indianapolis and Garfield Park. And to help us get into the mindset of celebrating and thinking about transit we’ll show “My Neighbor Totoro” in the parking lot of Safeway\, transit related arts activities and a short film of stuntman Evel Knievel jumping 14 buses on his red\, white and blue motorcycle preceding the movie. Safeway will be open so you can grab dinner at the cafe to enjoy with the movie. \nFollow the adventures of Satsuki and her four-year-old sister Mei when they move into a new home in the countryside. To their delight\, they discover that their new neighbor is Totoro\, a mysterious forest spirit who can only be seen by children. Totoro introduces them to extradordinary characters — including a cat that doubles as a bus! — and takes them on an incredible journey. \nThere will be around 50 chairs that are free to use but we also recommend you bring your own if you are arriving later. \nSpecial thanks to Safeway\, The Arts Council of Indianapolis\, and Transit Drives Indy\, and Public House Cinema for making this event possible. Learn about other Ready for The Red Line projects here.
