SUMMARY:Cyanotype Workshop with Aurora PhotoCenter
DESCRIPTION:Cyanotype is a camera-less photography made out in the sun\, rather than in a darkroom. You place objects — such as plants — on top of a piece of photo-treated paper\, and then use the sun to expose the paper. The result is an image that is an exact outline of the object. It’s a fun and magical way to engage photography! Although it may be new to modern people\, cyanotype has been around since photography was invented in the 1800s.\nCome explore the creative possibilities of this fascinating process!\nWe will have some objects on hand to experiment with\, but feel free to bring your own objects. Flat items usually work best\, and cyanotype can be messy\, so precious things like family heirlooms should probably stay at home. All other necessary materials will be provided free at the workshop.\nIn partnership with Aurora PhotoCenter for SPARK on the Circle.\nThis activity is best suited for artists 7+ years old; minors must be accompanied by an adult.\n\nWho? His authors a blog dedicated to the history of the Circle City\, www.class900indy.com His first history book about the city\, Vanished Indianapolis\, explores the history of lost sites across the city. When he is not researching local history\, Ed enjoys being a subpar fisherman and going kayaking on the White River and Fall Creek. \nThis series is in partnership with Indiana Humanities. \nIndiana Humanities is a statewide nonprofit that infuses the humanities into our daily lives. We do this by providing grants\, convening discussions\, uplifting humanities scholars\, spotlighting humanities organizations and activities\, and creating our own programs that help Hoosiers think\, read and talk. \nSPARK is a partnership with Downtown Indy\, the City of Indianapolis\, and the Indiana War Memorials Commission — and funded by the Capital Improvements Board. Games like foosball\, ping pong\, chess & checkers\, and giant Jenga are also available for additional entertainment. \nAll events are free at 320 N New Jersey Street in the greenspace right off the Cultural Trail. \n\nAbout Wick \nJohn Wick and Andrew Gustin met at IU Bloomington in 2006 and quickly bonded over similar music tastes. In 2007 they moved to Indianapolis and started an Indie Rock band called The Dwellers. The Dwellers were prolific and inspired by the DIY spirit and self released over 10 albums. In 2013 The Dwellers final album ‘Less is More’ was released by Jon Roger’s local label HIFR. \nIn 2021 John and Andrew reunited to make an album of songs John wrote in college. They started a new band called Wick and enlisted Dan Johnson to play drums and had John’s siblings Katie Jones and Ian Wick contribute with backing vocals on the album. Angel Baby is the single from the Wick album called “Forest” which will come out later in the year. \nThe band was joined by former Dwellers bassist Eric Brock to fill out the lineup. \nAbout the project \nA free gathering where knitting and graffiti collide! Simultaneously inspired by traditional knitting and graffiti\, this ever-evolving piece combines fiber adjacent activities\, coloring sheets derived from graffiti and knitting motifs\, and opportunities for participants to share their creative path stories.\nYou are invited to come join the fun\, because without YOU\, Boo\, this project can’t happen. Mary Jo Bayliss specializes in creating environments that help people feel at ease using space\, light and color to achieve these goals.

SUMMARY:Music Instrument building with Rob Funkhouser
DESCRIPTION:Join composer and sound artist Rob Funkhouser for a workshop exploring the hidden sounds of everyday objects. Funkhouser will guide audiences through strategies for using amplification to reimagine the world of tiny sounds happening around them through the use of musical instruments\, household items\, and contact microphones. Participants will get the chance to explore a set of instruments and objects\, and will also be guided on a short walk to find new sounds hidden in the environment around Monument Circle. No previous skills are required. Family friendly.\n\nAbout:\nRob Funkhouser is a composer\, performer\, and instrument builder who can never quite sit still. His work is concerned with ideas of place\, memory\, and pattern and he is interested in interrogating the interstitial spaces between established genres. He holds an M.M. from Butler University in Music Composition\, and most recently completed Peace of Mind\, Speed of Thought for Classical Music Indy. He has released projects through various labels in three different countries\, but finds his home turf on Auris Apothecary and Medium Sound. His current projects include an ongoing series of recordings and writing under the title Walking Music\, building a new set of instruments in collaboration with artist Justin Cooper\, and ongoing work on new performance tools for music and installations. In 2020\, he began a long-term living residency with Big Car as part of their APLR program. He also serves as Education Manager for the Rhythm Discovery Center\, where he runs public programming for schools and community members. DESCRIPTION:Join us and author Mary Sexson for a reading of her new book of poetry “Her Addiction\, An Empty Place at the Table.”\n\n“The book is a collection of poems that came to be written in response to the family problem of addiction. I feel that the poems are a chronicle of the fear\, shame\, and anger we went through as a family\, during the years of our daughter’s active drug use and addiction. I wrote these poems over the course of almost 10 years\, as a way to cope with the pain of it\, the absolute fear of it\, which I processed and filtered through the lenses of these words. My husband and I were also taking care of our daughter’s young son during this time\, because she was unable to care for him. I knew we were not alone\, that the dark secret of addiction was present within many families. I wanted this book to be some sort of acknowledgement that yes\, this happened to us. Maybe it happened to you. So we need to talk about it openly\, to tell the truth about it\, to let go of the secrets and the shame. Writing these poems helped to free me from those feelings\, and ultimately helped to heal me from within. I want people to have a healing process reading these poems\, even just to know that they’re not alone. And I want to acknowledge that the incredible road to recovery my daughter has journeyed on is also a part of that healing.”–Mary Sexson\n\nMary Sexson is author of the award-winning book\, 103 in the Light\, Selected Poems 1996-2000 (Restoration Press)\, and co-author of Company of Women\, New and Selected Poems (Chatter House Press). Sexson’s poetry is part of the INverse Poetry Archives for Hoosier Poets.\n\n“This is a poetry collection that will break your heart\, but also make you grateful you read it. Mary Sexson tells the story of her daughter’s addiction(s) honestly\, sometimes painfully\, with grace and love. The first time I read the powerful and moving manuscript I sensed it could be a challenge for her to find a publisher. As the author of a book of poems about surviving abuse by a priest\, however\, I also had faith that some wise publisher would admire a poet who confronts difficult topics and stories like the one that Mary Sexson has the courage to tell about herself\, her family\, and their struggles. Sometimes she is patient\, sometimes frustrated\, impatient\, exhausted\, angry\, but always she is honest. Sexson makes it clear that for everyone in the family there is “a heavy toll to pay.” At first\, the grandson is unaware of what’s going on\, but eventually his grandmother observes him playing “The Dinosaur Game\,” with “a family /of triceratops\,” then realizes\, “I buy him the dinosaurs / he configures / into the family he does not have.” Later the little boy asks his grandmother a series of questions\, including: “Why is [my] mommy not here?” On his bedside table\, a “Big Ironman” stands\, whose job is “to keep him safe / until her return.”\nIt’s no surprise that the grandparents find it difficult to share this painful story with others\, which makes the telling of so much truth in these eloquent poems noteworthy. “The price we all pay / for this level of intimacy is staggering\,” Sexson admits. “I ache for monotony…the comfort of it.” In “Map of My Fears\,” she says: “Your addiction draws lines / on my face\, deep and distinct.” She becomes “tired of writing about [her] in my head.” Finally\, the grandparents start to “whisper” the story of their daughter’s addiction\, telling others the “facts / bare and ugly as they were.”\nIn the last poem\, “The Words\,” Sexson reveals all that she would like to be able to tell her daughter on her 37th birthday. The last message is this: “Tell her / that you learn the truth about love / every time you are with her.” The poet is too wise to tell us\, directly\, what that truth is – the poems in this outstanding collection deserving of a wide audience have already made us see and feel it. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reading and music performance from poet\, activist and artist\, Sylvia Thomas. \nIn 2016\, Sylvia began performing her spoken word in Indianapolis. She performed at a few open mics and showcases. From then on\, she began to feature at different spots all over the state and the Midwest. In 2018\, her words took her to Copenhagen\, Denmark as a poet for Winter Pride. After her trip to Europe\, she wrote a collection of poems for her debut chapbook\, DIVINE. In 2020\, she began displaying her creative process of her works on Patreon. \nIn August of 2021\, she was a headliner for Copenhagen 2021: World Pride and EuroGames. After her World Pride performance\, she performed for a collaboration between the Global Queer Youth Network and the United Nation Envoy on Youth. Sylvia released her self-published book\, Twirl: A Collection of Poetry by a Queer and Transgender Hoosier\, in November of 2021. She continues to travel and create more work. Thomas is one of the long term residency artists in Big Car’s APLR program.

DESCRIPTION:Guichelaar Gallery \nWithin the brief window of our human existence\, the ability to come together\, protect\, and care for one another has allowed us to evolve into a complex\, beautiful species. But have we lost these vital sensibilities? Collectively\, we have forgotten how to connect with others\, provide comfort\, empathize and sustain community. \nA FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH is an exploration of the friction\, the barriers\, and distance between the relationships we create with one another and how they are inevitable yet necessary to our growth. Through a combination of sculptural\, textile\, and print work Nazarinne Ahmed & Colleen Gross explore the labor involved in cultivating these complicated\, intimate relationships. \n\nAbout Nazarinne Ahmed \n Nazarinne is a multidisciplinary artist\, whose work is the result of an obsessive search for balance\, security and comfort. Through the use of textile\, printmaking\, and tactile processes she creates a space to process\, make sense of the past and untangle the complexity of her religious upbringing\, cultural and racial identity. Through her work\, she examines the way these facets have shaped the manner in which she moves and makes sense of the world around her. \nNazarinne’s mother is of Caribbean descent and her father is of South Asian descent. They both immigrated to New York\, where they met and started a family\, eventually moving to Indiana\, where Nazarinne is currently based. \nAbout Colleen Gross  \nDarwin’s Theory of Female Sabotage \n400 chemistry vials\, 400 hollow point boat tail bullet wax castings\, 800 sewing pins. \nCertain types of relationships prove that our isolation is not permanent. That one person in the entire universe recognizes your humanity means that you yourself can\, too. \n“Female sabotage is an evolutionary theory regarding the propensity of certain females to select “burdened” males of their species for mating. This ensures that as the males die\, more food and other resources will remain for females and their young.” \nColleen is a sculptor from Indy exploring the stages of grief through their personal experience with loss and seeks to create environments for people to feel understood.They investigate the fundamentals of science to aid in the process of ending negative social cycles and introducing new\, more inclusive ways of being. DESCRIPTION:Arte Mexicano en Indiana and Big Car Collaborative are partnering to present the works by Mexican Daniela Martín del Campo & and Colombian Artist Gloomy Zauros. GOLDEN MYST represents a unique visual and spiritual experience\, where chromatic limitation becomes a window to reflection and contemplation: the deep black of the ink\, the shimmering gold and the immaculate white of the paper. \nGOLDEN MYST is the artistic dialogue between two talented creators: Daniela Martín del Campo\, outstanding Mexican children’s book illustrator\, who surprises us with her ability to weave enchanting visual narratives. Her reimagining of tarot cards transports the viewer into a realm of meaning and mystery. \nOn the other hand\, Gloomy Zauros\, heavily influenced by metal engraving and etching\, offers a different and fascinating perspective. His cards are meticulously crafted with fine lines and striking visual depth\, inviting us to immerse ourselves in the symbolic layers of the tarot. \nGOLDEN MYST is a tribute to the artistic diversity of Latin America and the richness of creative reinterpretation. Her work has been featured in Italy\, France\, Japan\, Mexico and the united States. \nGloomy Zauros\, a Colombian artist specializes in storytelling\, comic\, illustration\, and tattoo. His work has been recognized in France and Mexico among other countries. His imagination revolves around the oneiric and the occult\, and his technique is strongly influenced by metal engraving and ink etching. \nSobre los artistas: \nDaniela Martín del Campo es una ilustradora mexicana quien se inspira en el folklore de su país para generar imágenes simbólicas. Sus encantadores personajes y escenarios esconden narrativas paralelas que nos invitan a imaginar desenlaces misteriosos.
