DESCRIPTION:Appointments (required) start at 9am and end 7pm each day \nCall 317.361.3703 or email email hidden; JavaScript is required to schedule an appointment \nPhotographer Keliy Anderson-Staley will be making tintype portraits at Tube Factory June 13-16\, 2019. Tintype is a 19th-Century photographic process rarely practiced today. \nAll participants should expect the shoot to take 20-30 minutes\, and there might be a short wait\, even if you have an appointment. By sitting for a portrait\, you are participating in a long-term portrait project that now includes images of a couple thousand individuals. Everyone who sits for a portrait will be asked to sign a model release form and will receive a high resolution scan of the image via email 2-3 weeks after the shoot. Group portraits are possible\, but family portraits need to be limited to 5 members. People of all ages\, body types\, orientations and ethnicities are encouraged to come participate in this free portrait shooting event. \nWhat to Know before Your Portrait Sitting \n• Exposure times for tintypes can last up to 30 seconds. Sitters must remain relatively still during that time to make a clear\, sharp image (some blinking is okay). Small children or other subjects who may find it difficult to stay still for that amount of time may appear blurry in the final image. \n• Due to time and material restraints\, sitters will have only one image made. \n• Please wear clothes that do not have text and are not all white or all black. \n• Subjects who wear glasses may want to consider not wearing them for the portrait to reduce the chance of reflection in the final image. \nLearn more at www.auroraphoto.org

DESCRIPTION:The title refers to the surface layer of soil\, changed in the area around Santiniketan as the result of Tagore’s introduction of new flora in development of the campus. In studying this trajectory\, the film extends The Otolith Group’s ongoing consideration of the Anthropocene\, a premise that denotes that the current geological age is one wherein human activity spurs the primary changes on climate and the environment. With O Horizon\, The Otolith Group also proposes that Tagore’s project maps onto the notion of terraforming—a term originating in science fiction and now more widely used—whereby a party (typically but not always an interloper) reshapes the atmosphere of a place for their own needs. \nO Horizon reflects upon modernist theories of dance and song developed by Tagore and the experimental practices of mural\, sculpture\, painting\, and drawing developed by India’s great modernist artists affiliated with Santiniketan: K.G. Subramanyan\, Benode Behari Mukherjee\, Nandalal Bose and Ramkinkar Baij. SUMMARY:Lugao Kasberg: Balay Means Home
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Danicia Monét \nLugao Kasberg is a Mangyan-American artist based in New York City. His earliest memories were with family and community speaking his native Hanunó’o-Mangyan tongue in the Philippines. Balay means home in his traditional Hanuó’o language. Growing up in Indianapolis\, IN as an indigenous person he experienced the hardships of poverty\, depression\, and abuse when his parents separated. Through the strength of family\, education\, entrepreneurship\, and the arts he learned the importance of hard work and dedication as he was determined to attain a better life while also helping others. \n\nDuring high school and college Lugao orchestrated community outreach initiatives which helped hundreds of youth explore\, share\, and celebrate art. This effort also ignited his love for film\, photography\, and documentation. As a successful commercial artist in New York City he was involved in creating works for some of the top brands in the world. After feeling creatively drained and unfulfilled in 2018 Lugao decided to reunite with his Mangyan family in the Philippines and live in the village. \n\nHe documented his journey through film\, photography\, and audio recording. Lugao is the first of his eight Mangyan-siblings and mother to return to their ancestral land after leaving for the United States in 1992. He shares the importance of family\, community\, and the connection to the land. Mangyans are the indigenous people of Mindoro Island in the Philippines. They have inhabited the land for thousands of years by practicing sustainable farming and developed tightly knit communities with their own language\, writing systems\, and government. \n\nLike many other indigenous people\, Mangyans also face issues of discrimination\, land rights\, and access to resources. As a solution\, Lugao is using his platform to create visibility while also helping to grow the culture by developing initiatives for the youth and community through education and the arts. One such initiative is “Rice 4 Kidz”. This endeavor has had an impact by serving over 55\,000 hot meals to one thousand Mangyan schoolchildren with the help of rice sponsors\, faculty\, and international community during the hunger months of August through October. SUMMARY:Michael Bauchert : Faux Ambiance
DESCRIPTION:Faux Ambiance is an audio/video installation that wildly exaggerates the sound of a room. Created by Michael Bauchert\, Faux Ambiance turns an ordinary space into an other-worldly cathedral which slowly morphs in character over time. All sound made by those present to Faux Ambiance has dramatic\, sonic and visual consequences. \nProjected onto the wall is a wash of vibrant color in the form of a gas\, or is it a liquid? The sound of the room displaces this substance like a hand moving through water. It’s texture and shape morphs over time\, reflecting the ever-changing timbre of the Faux Ambiance. \nThis installation is inspired by the diverse\, acoustic properties of rooms and spaces. A hand clap sounds very dry and compact outdoors\, yet thunderous and prolonged in a tall stairwell; the same action can have a very different reaction depending on its location. Faux Ambiance seeks to pay tribute and parody to this aspect of sound through technology.

DESCRIPTION:A short film that critically illuminates the design by the Israeli architect and former Bauhaus student Arieh Sharon for the University of Ife campus\, Ile–Ife\, Nigeria\, built in 1962 as part of an Israeli assistance program in West-Africa. Zvi Efrat\, architect and architectural historian\, is a partner in Efrat-Kowalsky Architects (EKA) and was head of the Department of Architecture at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design\, Jerusalem\, from 2002 until 2010. He studied at Pratt Institute\, at NYU\, and at Princeton University. He has taught at several universities\, lectured worldwide\, published extensively\, and curated numerous exhibitions\, among them Borderline Disorder at the Israeli Pavilion of the 8th Architectural Biennale\, Venice\, in 2002\, and The Object of Zionism at the Swiss Architecture Museum in Basel in 2011. After intervening gigs in both Carolinas and contributing to NUVO and the Indianapolis Star\, Colin now works as Senior Writer at Borshoff\, just above Needler’s Fresh Market. DESCRIPTION:Making their second trip to Duke’s Indy\, do not miss one of our favorite Bluegrass Bands around. \nRaw\, soulful\, and with plenty of swagger\, Town Mountain has earned raves for their hard-driving sound\, their in-house songwriting and the honky-tonk edge that permeates their exhilarating live performances\, whether in a packed club or at a sold-out festival. The hearty base of Town Mountain’s music is the first and second generation of bluegrass spiced with country\, old school rock ‘n’ roll\, and boogie-woogie. It’s what else goes into the mix that brings it all to life both on stage and on record and reflects the group’s wide-ranging influences – from the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia and the ethereal lyrics of Robert Hunter\, to the honest\, vintage country of Willie\, Waylon\, and Merle. The Bend Bulletin’s Brian McElhiney says Town Mountain\, “has serious country and rock ’n’ roll DNA.” Town Mountain features guitarist and vocalist Robert Greer\, banjoist Jesse Langlais\, mandolinist Phil Barker\, fiddler Bobby Britt\, and Zach Smith on bass. \nTown Mountain just finished recording their 6th studio album at Echo Mountain Studios with roots music hero Caleb Klauder producing. Slated to release this Fall\, the album is full of new material and features several guest artists including Tyler Childers who co-wrote one of the songs\, Miles Miller (Sturgill Simpson\, drummer)\, and other friends. Their most recent album\, Southern Crescent (April 1\, 2016) debuted at #4 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart while staying for ten weeks on the Americana Music Association’s radio chart Top 40\, and widely considered one of the best bluegrass albums of that year.

DESCRIPTION:Carl Pope\, Conner Green\, Elisa Harkins\, Osuma James Nakagawa & Yvette Mayorga \nMay 10-June 22 \nRecord of Memory is a survey of artists who are reflecting on existing monuments and fashioning new monuments. At the time a public monument is conceived\, it is a tribute to our cities built by its citizens and dedicated to social progress\, industrial achievement\, civic interest\, patriotism and culture. Works were selected with this idea of monuments in mind by curators Shauta Marsh\, Garry Holstein\, and Jeremy Efroymson as part of Social Alchemy\, a series of exhibitions and events exploring the concepts driving our current ideas of utopia and dystopia. \nMonuments are symbols of hope\, of warning\, of honor\, encountered daily. We often think of them as sculpture or statues but increasingly we are all creating them on the internet in the form of videos\, websites\, even Facebook profiles. Our monuments remind present and future people of what we should be striving for. They reference our current goals of utopia.  Other times they serve as reminders of tragedy/of dystopia\, and what happens when we deviate from our utopic goals\, to help us avoid re-occurrence. \nCarl Pope’s photography pulls us into his experience exploring rural Germany via train. The color process on his work references the multi-colored rainbow\, a symbol of the LGBTQ community. The nuclear reactor\, Mother Mary and the Tin Man give the viewer a new perspective\, both capturing and asking us to reconsider what we believe about these objects and characters by presenting them the way we see standard monuments. \nConner Green’s inverted collage prints resembling schematic drawings investigate the social ramifications of monumental architecture through collages of found materials\, drawings\, and photographs. “I understand ‘architecture’ to refer to more than just the design and decoration of buildings\, but also to how thought or action can make order and meaning out of random space\,” Green says. “My work\, in part\, attempts to excavate those embedded meanings.” The rendered forms do not refer to any extant structures; rather they attempt to portray a kind of typological composite of built forms throughout history. \nMuscogee (Creek) Hymn and The Plain Indians Sign Language video works by Elisa Harkins are monuments in their right.  In Plain Indians Sign Language\, Harkins tells the story of her friend’s death. She uses sign language\, which was invented by indigenous people and adopted by settlers\, to both honor her friend and remind us that ASL came from a people and culture white settlers attempted to destroy. Muscogee (Creek) Hymn asks us to reflect on how song influences our ideas. Creek songs were never taught\, rather learned. The Creek may not know the details of where those hymns came from—common belief is they’re handed down from God himself—but they know what’s important: the people\, the milestones\, and the stories the songs represent. \nIn Osamu James Nakagawa’s work\, Maps\, the landscape often functions as a witness to history and suffering\, as well as a platform to examine conflicts political and personal in nature. The works are rubbings of monuments to the dead erected post WWII throughout Japan. Raised in Tokyo\, Japan\, Nakagawa’s family moved to Houston\, Texas when he was fifteen. As an artist he mines the complicated pasts of both countries\, touching on nationalism\, family\, pop-culture\, tensions between eastern and western ideals\, and war. \nEvery aspect of Yvette Mayorga’s built world is adorned with spectacular\, rapacious iconography. Monumental fashion accessories and gendered toys interrogate the true meaning of “status\,” while decadent\, Colonial aesthetics remind us of the fragility of national identity\, and how frequently it depends on appearances. DESCRIPTION:Two Stones explores the trajectories and ideals of the Bauhaus-trained\, German architect Lotte Stam-Beese and the Caribbean activist and writer Hermina Huiswoud through dialogues and appearances by contemporary protagonists. Both Stam-Beese and Huiswoud spent time working in the Soviet Union in the early 1930s and both ended up being active in the Netherlands after WWII. \nTwo Stones was filmed in the 1930s constructivist district of KhTZ in Kharkiv\, Ukraine\, the first large housing project on which Lotte Stam-Beese worked\, and in Stam-Beese’s celebrated 1950s Pendrecht\, designed during her period as Rotterdam’s main architect / urban planner. \nIn the 1970s\, Hermina Huiswoud was agitating against the Rotterdam housing rule\, which limited Caribbean Dutch inhabitants to settle in any of the city’s districts if their presence would exceed 5% of the population. \nResonances as well as dissonances between the distinct trajectories of the two women and their expectation from communist ideology\, are sensed through thoughts and experiences of the protagonists\, who all have a personal or professional relation to the issues at hand. \nThis screening is part of the Bauhaus Imaginista: Collected Research exhibition. \nProject partners:\nGoethe-Institut\, Bauhaus Kooperation\, Haus der Kulturen der Welt. \nFunded by:\nDie Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien\, Auswärtiges Amt\, Kulturstiftung des Bundes. \nOn the occasion of 100 Jahre bauhaus (100 Years of Bauhaus).

While often overshadowed by their male counterparts\, recent renewed interest has brought to light the female students and teachers of the Bauhaus and their incredible contributions to the Modernist movement. \nShelley Selim is Associate Curator of Design and Decorative Arts at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. She provides curatorial oversight of the museum’s design and decorative art collections\, as well as its two historic homes—the Lilly House and the Miller House and Garden. Preceding his studies at the École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Duperré and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris\, and at Escola Massana\, Centre d’Art i Disseny in Barcelona\, he spent several years in Congo and in South America. \nThe experience with these different cultures\, the histories of which over centuries have been characterised by rich trading traditions\, colonialism and multi-ethnic societies\, has fostered Kader Attia’s intercultural and interdisciplinary approach of research. For many years\, he has been exploring the perspective that societies have on their history\, especially as regards experiences of deprivation and suppression\, violence and loss\, and how this affects the evolving of nations and individuals — each of them being connected to collective memory. \nHis socio-cultural research has led Kader Attia to the notion of Repair\, a concept he has been developing philosophically in his writings and symbolically in his oeuvre as a visual artist. With the principle of Repair being a constant in nature — thus also in humanity —\, any system\, social institution or cultural tradition can be considered as an infinite process of Repair\, which is closely linked to loss and wounds\, to recuperation and re-appropriation. Repair reaches far beyond the subject and connects the individual to gender\, philosophy\, science\, and architecture\, and also involves it in evolutionary processes in nature\, culture\, myth and history. \nIn 2016\, Kader Attia founded La Colonie\, a space in Paris to share ideas and to provide an agora for vivid discussion. Focussing on decolonialisation not only of peoples but also of knowledge\, attitudes and practices\, it aspires to de-compartmentalise knowledge by a trans-cultural\, trans-disciplinary and trans-generational approach. DESCRIPTION:Barry Gaunt will speak about alien abduction and the effect of the phenomenon on one’s life. \nBarry\, currently serves as a member of the renowned Society of the Supernatural. He is the MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) State Director of Kentucky and is a STAR Team Certified Field Investigator for MUFON. He is also a Cohost of “Into The Fire” a podcast on Blog Talk Radio. He is the Managing Director of the NightStalkers Paranormal Research Team\, which researches\, and investigates Hauntings\, UFO Reports\, Alien Abductions\, and Strange Creature reports on a case by case basis. \nBarry is a full-time volunteer at the famed and haunted Octagon Hall Museum and assists the Museum Director with the daily operations of the Museum\, along with hosting the Museum’s popular Novice Hunts with his paranormal team\, Nightstalkers Paranormal. DESCRIPTION:Yvette Mayorga’s multi-media installation High Maintenance is a flamboyantly chilling revelation\, offering unsettling insights into how the forces of violence\, make-believe\, and consumerism infiltrate the contemporary immigrant experience\, and subvert our understanding of identity. \nDrawing inspiration from the politics of America’s southern border with Mexico\, her own life as a first generation Latinx-American\, and her parents’ often dangerous experiences as immigrants in the 1970s\, Mayorga’s work examines how pain and uncertainty are covered with a veneer of celebration. \nHigh Maintenanceconjures up an absurdist\, Rococo Candy Land\, where frivolity intersects with fear\, as soldiers and ICE agents come face to face with quinceanera cakes\, white swans\, and Polly Pocket adventure sets. \nEvery aspect of Mayorga’s built world is adorned with spectacular\, rapacious iconography. Monumental fashion accessories and gendered toys interrogate the true meaning of “status\,” while decadent\, Colonial aesthetics remind us how fragile national identity is\, and how frequently it depends on appearances. \nIs this a place of joy or fear? Does it welcome us in all our diversity\, or demand our assimilation? SUMMARY:The Name of the Machine from the Moon
DESCRIPTION:An installation of sound\, image and time travel by Toby Kaufmann-Buhler\, centering around the inventor Richard Jordan Gatling and a radio play written by literary critic and philosopher Walter Benjamin. \nThe inventor Richard Jordan Gatling (1818-1903) made a home and started a family with Jemima Sanders in Indianapolis in the mid-1850s. He is most well-known for the early machine gun he invented\, to which he gave his name. The design for this gun began with farm equipment (also of his design)\, then took shape as a complete design and went into production during the 1860s in Indianapolis; the Gatling Gun Company was also formed and headquartered in the city during this time. Currently\, the only publicly extant evidence of Gatling’s life (and complicated legacy) in Indianapolis is in the form of a large grave memorial for his family in Crown Hill Cemetery. \nWalter Benjamin (1892-1940) was a literary critic\, essayist and\nphilosopher born in Berlin\, Germany; he spent most of his early life in Germany\, and subsequently he lived itinerantly throughout Europe. Benjamin had a complicated and largely unfruitful relationship with the German academic establishment\, and resulting from this and the scattered nature of his work in WWII-era Europe\, his writings (which have had a large impact on studies in the humanities and the arts) have been mostly published posthumously. His scripted work for the German radio during the years 1927-1933 has only recently been translated and published in English. \nBoth Richard Jordan Gatling and Walter Benjamin are relations in the artist’s family; as such the work presented here seeks to explore what connections can be made between them. \nwww.self-surveillance.tumblr.com \nThis project is made possible by support of the Indiana Arts Commission.
