SUMMARY:Keren Cytter: Rose Garden
DESCRIPTION:Video Gallery  \nCytter’s short 2014 film explores the unsettling duality of American culture’s ideals regarding being protectors of life and harbingers of death. This title is a reference to both the 1964 Joanne Greenburg book I Never Promised You a Rose Garden\, which deals with mental illness and the 1971-84 Marine Corp recruitment campaign “We Don’t Promise You A Rose Garden.” These references are meant to clue the viewer in that the seemingly ordinary setting hides a distorted reality. As the tension builds\, multiple guns and disjointed conversations between characters escalate the sense that the calm is about to be shattered. A chaotic shooting spree unfolds against the backdrop of normal daily life. The chilling final scene serves as a grim conclusion addressing violence and its pervasive presence within American culture. \nRun time: 8 minutes and 55 seconds \nPlease note: This work contains adult themes and gun violence that some may find triggering. \nAbout the artist \nKeren Cytter (b. 1977) creates films\, performances\, drawings and photographs on topics of social alienation\, language representation\, and the function of individuals in predetermined cultural systems through experimental modes of storytelling and human perception. Mostly characterised by a non-linear\, cyclical logic Cytter’s films consist of multiple layers of images; conversation; monologue\, and narration systematically composed to undermine linguistic conventions and traditional interpretation schemata. Recalling amateur home movies and video diaries\, these montages of impressions\, memories\, and imaginings are poetic and self-referential in composition. The artist creates intensified scenes drawn from everyday life in which the overwhelmingly artificial nature of the situations portrayed is echoed by the very means of their production. \nCytter was awarded the Joseph Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (2021)\, Absolut Art Award\, Stockholm (2009)\, Ars Viva Prize\, Kulturkreis der Deutschen Wirtschaft\, Berlin (2008) and the Bâloise Art Prize at Art Basel (2006). \nRecent solo exhibitions include Hot Lava Night\, Kunsthalle Bielefeld\, Bielefeld\, Germany (2023); Double Standard\, LLS Paleis\, Antwerp\, Belgium (2023). Cytter’s work was showcased in a major survey exhibition at the Ludwig Forum Aachen (2022)\, featuring: films\, soap operas\, plays\, sculptures\, drawings\, novels\, zines\, life coaching guides\, children’s books and a festival. Gass’s 1968 fiction story\, “In the Heart of the Heart of the Country.”\nThe episode features excerpts of the story as well as a conversation about what it means to be a writer living and working in Indiana. This launches an eight-part series made possible by Indiana Humanities and produced by WQRT and Big Car Collaborative.\nYou can listen live via the streaming link or listen on regular FM radio in Indianapolis by tuning in to 99.1 FM. After it debuts on the station\, it will be available for listening online. We’ll share that link here.\nAbout the participants in this show (all Indiana writers):\nSusan Neville is the author of six works of creative nonfiction and her collections of short fiction include The Town of Whispering Dolls\, winner of the Doctorow Prize for Innovative Fiction; In the House of Blue Lights\, winner of the Richard Sullivan prize; and Invention of Flight\, winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction. She teaches at Butler University.\nAdrian Matejka was born in Nuremberg\, Germany and grew up in Indianapolis\, Indiana. He teaches at Indiana University in Bloomington and served as Poet Laureate of Indiana for 2018-19. He is the author of five award winning books and his first graphic novel\, “Last On His Feet” is forthcoming from Liveright in 2022.\nKevin McKelvey is a place-based poet\, writer\, designer\, and social practice artist. He teaches at University of Indianapolis and directs the M.A. in Social Practice Art and oversees the undergraduate major in Environmental Sustainability. At University of Indianapolis\, he founded Etchings Press\, a student-run publisher\, helped start a community garden and microfarm\, and has contributed to numerous interdisciplinary efforts for students and the community.\nJim Walker is a poet\, artist\, and teacher who believes everyone deserves open access to the joys of art\, creativity\, and great public places. A co-founder and executive director of Big Car Collaborative\, Jim worked previously as a journalist (writer\, photographer\, editor\, and designer). He’s a student of cities and enjoys spending time with his family\, supporting his Garfield Park neighborhood\, walking\, biking\, travel\, reading\, and baseball.

DESCRIPTION:Making their second trip to Duke’s Indy\, do not miss one of our favorite Bluegrass Bands around. \nRaw\, soulful\, and with plenty of swagger\, Town Mountain has earned raves for their hard-driving sound\, their in-house songwriting and the honky-tonk edge that permeates their exhilarating live performances\, whether in a packed club or at a sold-out festival. The hearty base of Town Mountain’s music is the first and second generation of bluegrass spiced with country\, old school rock ‘n’ roll\, and boogie-woogie. It’s what else goes into the mix that brings it all to life both on stage and on record and reflects the group’s wide-ranging influences – from the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia and the ethereal lyrics of Robert Hunter\, to the honest\, vintage country of Willie\, Waylon\, and Merle. The Bend Bulletin’s Brian McElhiney says Town Mountain\, “has serious country and rock ’n’ roll DNA.” Town Mountain features guitarist and vocalist Robert Greer\, banjoist Jesse Langlais\, mandolinist Phil Barker\, fiddler Bobby Britt\, and Zach Smith on bass. \nTown Mountain just finished recording their 6th studio album at Echo Mountain Studios with roots music hero Caleb Klauder producing. Slated to release this Fall\, the album is full of new material and features several guest artists including Tyler Childers who co-wrote one of the songs\, Miles Miller (Sturgill Simpson\, drummer)\, and other friends. Their most recent album\, Southern Crescent (April 1\, 2016) debuted at #4 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart while staying for ten weeks on the Americana Music Association’s radio chart Top 40\, and widely considered one of the best bluegrass albums of that year.

DESCRIPTION:Brought together by family ties and a shared appreciation for folk\, rock\, and roots music\, The Currys are an Americana trio featuring brothers Jimmy and Tommy and cousin Galen Curry. Like many family groups\, their songs are anchored by the sort of elastic\, entwined harmonies that only seem to exist among kin. On their second record\, West of Here\, their songwriting chops match those interlocking voices\, with all three members contributing songs to an album that deals with the constant search for home.
