SUMMARY:Wagon of Wonders at The Feast of Lanterns
DESCRIPTION:Join us for one of Indianapolis’s most beautiful evenings in one of our most beautiful neighborhoods\, Windsor Park. Big Car will be there with our mobile museum and activities\,The Wagon of Wonders. \nAbout the Feast of Lanterns \nThe Feast of Lanterns is a historic festival based on the Near Eastside of Indianapolis. Its earliest incarnations in the late 1800s were of small gatherings and decorated front porches in nearby neighborhoods like Woodruff Place. By 1909 these neighborhood events had morphed in to a single\, larger festival that took place in Spades Park. Neighbors came out to hang paper lanterns—lit first by candles and later by electric lights. The park\, historic bandstand\, and numerous bridges were illuminated by the colorful lantern lights. Nearby homes would  participate by decorating their porches. As time passed—through World War I\, the Roaring 20s\, and Prohibition—the event continued to be celebrated. But by the 1940s the event was held only sporadically and eventually not at all. \nIn the early 2000s local neighbors from Windsor Park and Springdale were looking to begin an outdoor music festival and re-discovered the historic Feast of Lanterns festival. The theme of colorful lanterns lit throughout the park was incorporated with local music\,  craft vendors\, and neighborhood booths. Eventually the event was hosted by Near Eastside Community Organization (NESCO) for more than a decade. In 2015\, NESCO announced they would not be hosting Feast as part of their efforts to reorganize and refocus as an organization. This year’s Feast of Lanterns\, hosted by Lanterns Foundation\, brings a refocus on the origins of the event\, local neighbors and neighborhoods working together to not only put on a festival but also to build community.

SUMMARY:Paddlit -- Part of the In Light In Festival
DESCRIPTION:Selected to be part of the In Light In festival that celebrates the 100th anniversary of Central Indiana Community Foundation\, Big Car lights up the paddle boats that\, using human power to chug through the canal. The Paddlit (paddle it) project involves the people on the boats working as paddlers — maybe better called petalers — who’ll be able to alter the cadence of waterproof LED lights glowing on and off colorfully just above the water. In this way\, everybody who rents a paddle boat is a collaborator and performer.

SUMMARY:Southeast Side Roadway Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will take place in anticipation of the arrival of international artist Peter Gibson (roadsworth.com) to Indianapolis. We will engage the following topics and opportunities for Southeast communities: \n\nRoadway art on Pleasant Run\n\nCreating visual interest to reclaim public space\nLocating target areas\nIntroduction to the work of Peter Gibson (roadsworth.com)\n\n\nReclaiming Shelby Street \n\nHow do we make Shelby Street more pedestrian friendly?\nHow do we address traffic volume/speed concerns?\n\n\nWalkability and Bikability Signage\n\nIdentifying pedestrian friendly assets\nImproving awareness of assets \nMapping wayfinding sign locations\n\n\nCreate Places For People Neighborhood Initiative \n\nIdentify bike/walkability goals for the Southeast side\nDevelop a plan for engaging residents\n\n\n\n\n_________ \nPlaces For People – Southeast Side Roadway Series \nThe Southeast Side of Indianapolis is first and foremost a neighborhood and a community of people.  However\, when we look at the roadways\, much of the infrastructure is oriented towards prioritizing car commuters.Residents\, pedestrians\, and cyclists seem largely excluded from the equation. What does it look like to imagine our roadways as something more? How can we include places for people to exist and thrive alongside our neighborhood thoroughfares? Capitalizing on the momentum of previous successful placemaking initiatives\, we will look for solutions to these questions and more. \nThis series is presented as part of Big Car Collaborative’s placemaking initiative with Reconnecting to our Waterways. By using methods gleaned from Spark: Monument Circle and the Rethinking Our Streets project with DPW in Mapleton-Fall Creek\, we will be envisioning and enacting positive steps toward a more vibrant and inclusive community. \n____________________ \nCheck out bigcar.org for details on these other events from Places For People – Southeast Side Roadway Series: \n“Roadsworth” Peter Gibson Artist Lunch Talk- Friday\, June 10\, 12:00pm \nGibson will give a lunchtime presentation of his work at the Tube Factory Artspace on Friday\, June 10 at 12:00pm and will discuss his process and intentions for the street painting workshop that will be held the following day. A light lunch will be provided. \n\nStreet Painting Workshop Saturday\, June 11\, 12:00-5:00pm \nLocal artists are invited to take part in this hands-on learning experience. International street artist Peter Gibson will share insights into his creative process and techniques for pavement painting. More details can be found at bigcar.org.

SUMMARY:The Pogue's Run Pursuit

Let’s explore! \nIn conjunction with Spark Monument Circle\, the White River Festival\, and Reconnecting to Our Waterways\, Big Car Collaborative invites you to stoke your imagination and trek with us through the heart of downtown Indianapolis circa 1915. Together\, we will hunt for the historical path Pogue’s Run once carved\, meandering to the White River. \nAll adventurers will arrive at 6:30 p.m. to the Spark Welcome Trailer on the east side of Monument Circle for an brief\, fun and informative historical overview of George Pogue (c.1763–1821)\, Indy’s humble beginnings\, and the story of Pogue’s Run. \nA 90-minute walk will lead explorers along the historical banks of Pogue’s Run as previously charted by Pittsburgh based artist Sean Derry. Explorers will navigate old-timey maps along our modern city thoroughfares while pondering what life was like for residents along the White River tributary in centuries past. Explore the mysterious disappearance of George Pogue\, and the similar disappearance of the waterway bearing his name.
