SUMMARY:Cyanotype Workshop with Asli Narin
DESCRIPTION:Cyanotype is a camera-less photography made out in the sun\, rather than in a darkroom. You place objects — such as plants — on top of a piece of photo-treated paper\, and then use the sun to expose the paper. The result is an image that is an exact outline of the object. It’s a fun and magical way to engage photography! Although it may be new to modern people\, cyanotype has been around since photography was invented in the 1800s.\n\nCome explore the creative possibilities of this fascinating process with Indianapolis-based artist Asli Narin. Narin often incorporates cyanotype into her artistic practice. She will give a short talk about cyanotype at the beginning of each hour\, and then you will make your own cyanotypes with Narin’s assistance.\n\nWe will have some objects on hand to experiment with\, but feel free to bring your own objects. Flat items usually work best\, and cyanotype can be messy\, so precious things like family heirlooms should probably stay at home. All other necessary materials will be provided free at the workshop.\n\nThis activity is best suited for artists 7+ years old; minors must be accompanied by an adult.\n\nAsli Narin (1985\, Istanbul) is a visual artist and an educator based in Indianapolis\, US. Narin’s artistic practice is based on photography as well as video\, installation\, and performance\, inspired by nature and the cities. Taking inspiration from walking and wandering\, she explores the human experience through forms and abstractions. Her subjects are often the thresholds and dualities of life.\n\nImage: Anna Atkins is famous for these cyanotypes she made of British algae in the 1840s. A book she made out of her cyanotypes is considered to be the first photobook ever made.\n\nIn partnership with Aurora PhotoCenter for SPARK on the Circle
.

SUMMARY:Keith Beatty-Lunch Break Live Tuesdays presented by Lake City Bank
DESCRIPTION:Hands down…Keith Beatty was born to sing. Growing up in Indianapolis and moving on to sing in the Indiana University Choral Ensemble\, the crooner made his mark on teachers and students and was known as the man with the melodic voice.\nUnleashing the music deep down\, Beatty writes music for life\, not hype. He sings with passion\, emphasis\, and with a way that will warm the coldest heart. He speaks truth to his listeners giving them a dose of reality a la his life experiences.\nAs a true talent that can draw you in with one stroke of his guitar\, Beatty strongly believes music is life recorded\, and those who love R&B and Soul will hear sweet sounds out of lips that only bring what’s real. Like the songs sang by Aretha Franklin and the Temptations\, Keith Beatty’s songs will be added to the history books as songs from an artist with true talent.\n\nFood Truck: Taste of Manila\n\nWe at Big Car are teaming up with Downtown Indy and the City of Indianapolis — with support from the Capital Improvement Board and the Indiana War Memorials Commission— to spark Monument Circle with human-scale activities like games\, live music\, artmaking\, and socializing in a comfortable place. SUMMARY:New Harmony Community Conversation-Social Alchemy
DESCRIPTION:New Harmony residents are invited to our help plan for our reboot of Social Alchemy\, a series of events connecting New Harmony and Indianapolis! These meet ups in New Harmony invite residents to meet those involved in proposing in the project and become part of it.\nThis meeting we will discuss the symposium which is scheduled for April 10-13\, 2022.\n\nE-mail email hidden; JavaScript is required for the Zoom link. This meeting is at 6pm in New Harmony\, IN.\n\nWhy is this called Social Alchemy? In our research about New Harmony\, we discovered that Father George Rapp — founder of the Harmonists\, the first utopian experiment in New Harmony — studied alchemy and was trying to make gold and other precious commodities to fund his vision of utopia. Today\, with New Harmony already a successful town with much to offer (including events and public programs)\, this project and symposium combines all the assets of New Harmony: the people who live there\, the architecture\, art\, and food to celebrate and expand the town’s magic to Indianapolis and hopefully even further. We’re calling this mixture of everything Social Alchemy.\n\nNew Harmony\, Indiana brims with art\, history\, architecture\, and a strong sense of place. The impact of past and current efforts within this community have created a town that continues to represent the universal human condition.\n\nWhat can we in urban Indianapolis learn from rural New Harmony’s social alchemy? Tons. With support of Indiana Humanities and the Efroymson Family fund and our partners — University of Southern Indiana\, Indiana State Museum\, Historic New Harmony\, New Harmony Workingmen’s Institute Central Library\, and lots of individuals –– we will explore\, learn and share how the pursuit of utopia forms places and pursuits.\n\nWHY IS BIG CAR INVOLVED?\nWe’re fascinated by people who strive for utopia and by intentional communities: Past\, present\, and future. Our overarching goal for the Cruft Street Commons project in Garfield Park is to develop an arts-focused\, socially cohesive block. And a key inspiration is the southwestern Indiana town\, New Harmony — location of multiple and varied utopian experiments.\n\nTHE PROGRAM\nThis idea started with visits by Big Car Collaborative/Tube Factory artspace curator\, Shauta Marsh\, and artist and writer Jim Walker\, to New Harmony over the past several years and conversations with artist\, writer\, and philanthropist Jeremy Efroymson — who lives\, part-time\, in New Harmony — and former New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art director Garry Holstein. It is made possible by Indiana Humanities and The Efroymson Family Fund.\n\nWHAT WE’RE DOING:\n• An interdisciplinary exhibition at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art focused on New Harmony’s visionary civic leader and preservationist Jane Owen (1915–2010).\n• An exhibition at the Tube Factory about the history and art of New Harmony (designed to travel)\, with emphasis on Angel in the Forest and visual interpretations of this lyrical text.\n• A series of radio shows.\n• A symposium in April 2022 in New Harmony to include philosophers\, writers\, historians\, designers\, architects\, placemakers\, urban and rural city planners\, politicians\, and community organizers.\n• Two Tube Factory exhibitions by Native American artists Elisa Harkins and Wendy Red Star: both creative responses to their peoples’ forced dystopias\, with ideas for cultural renewal.\n\nTHE IMPACT\nThis project explores historical and contemporary examples of utopian experiments\, fictional utopias and dystopias\, and social design projects. It offers a deeper understanding of the relationship between the built environment and social good.\n\nPROJECT PARTNERS\nUniversity of Southern Indiana: As the administrator of both Historic New Harmony and the New Harmony Gallery\, USI is encouraging staff\, professors\, and students to participate in the project.\n\nHistoric New Harmony: HNH will host programs\, help to develop the exhibitions\, and help travel the New Harmony exhibition about after its Indianapolis debut.\nNew Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art: The gallery will host the Jane Owen exhibition.\nIndiana State Museum: The museum will be assisting with research\, and help with didactics.\nPattern will be a promotional partner alongside Big Car’s low-power radio station 99.1 WQRT FM.

SUMMARY:Walking Wednesday-Public Art with Julia Muney Moore
DESCRIPTION:Public art is everywhere\, but sometimes we miss it when we are in a hurry or are quickly driving by. Take time to relax and enjoy our city’s public art in this themed walk led by Julia Muney Moore of the Arts Council of Indianapolis. \nMEET on the East Plaza of City Market. We don’t walk if the weather is terrible. Walks are free but bring some money if you’d like to stop for a snack or drink in the middle. \nFree and open to the public // All ages \nBrought to you by Spark Placemaking and Indianapolis City Market with support from Southwest Airlines and Project for Public Spaces through the Heart of the Community program. \nAbout Julia Muney Moore\nMoore is an arts administrator\, curator\, educator\, and art historian. She has curated\, selected\, and managed public art projects since 2000. Driven by a belief that public art should both inspire and reflect its community\, Julia’s favorite projects are those that challenge traditional approaches to bring a mixture of surprise\, thoughtfulness and joy into public space. \nAt the Arts Council\, Julia oversees community and civic public art projects\, public art master planning\, and ongoing programming to improve artists’ capacity to create public art. She is currently developing a new Public Art for Neighborhoods program with the City of Indianapolis\, integrating both grant funding for neighborhood organizations and percent-for-art-style installations in private development. \nPrior to her work at the Arts Council\, she served as the Director of Exhibitions and Artist Services at the Indianapolis Art Center\, curating over 250 gallery and public projects in 14 years. As the Public Art Administrator for Blackburn Architects\, Inc.\, she oversaw the selection\, fabrication and installation of public art in new construction; key projects included developing multi-million-dollar public art programs for Indianapolis International Airport and Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis\, and planning public art for cultural districts and other civic initiatives. Julia has also taught art history and art appreciation at colleges and universities in Central Indiana. She received her B.A. from Bryn Mawr College and her M.A. in Art History from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts\, in addition to a M.B.A. from Ball State University.

SUMMARY:Wagon of Wonders at The Feast of Lanterns
DESCRIPTION:Join us for one of Indianapolis’s most beautiful evenings in one of our most beautiful neighborhoods\, Windsor Park. Big Car will be there with our mobile museum and activities\,The Wagon of Wonders. \nAbout the Feast of Lanterns \nThe Feast of Lanterns is a historic festival based on the Near Eastside of Indianapolis. Its earliest incarnations in the late 1800s were of small gatherings and decorated front porches in nearby neighborhoods like Woodruff Place. By 1909 these neighborhood events had morphed in to a single\, larger festival that took place in Spades Park. Neighbors came out to hang paper lanterns—lit first by candles and later by electric lights. The park\, historic bandstand\, and numerous bridges were illuminated by the colorful lantern lights. Nearby homes would  participate by decorating their porches. As time passed—through World War I\, the Roaring 20s\, and Prohibition—the event continued to be celebrated. But by the 1940s the event was held only sporadically and eventually not at all. \nIn the early 2000s local neighbors from Windsor Park and Springdale were looking to begin an outdoor music festival and re-discovered the historic Feast of Lanterns festival. The theme of colorful lanterns lit throughout the park was incorporated with local music\,  craft vendors\, and neighborhood booths. Eventually the event was hosted by Near Eastside Community Organization (NESCO) for more than a decade. In 2015\, NESCO announced they would not be hosting Feast as part of their efforts to reorganize and refocus as an organization. This year’s Feast of Lanterns\, hosted by Lanterns Foundation\, brings a refocus on the origins of the event\, local neighbors and neighborhoods working together to not only put on a festival but also to build community.

SUMMARY:Paddlit -- Part of the In Light In Festival
DESCRIPTION:Selected to be part of the In Light In festival that celebrates the 100th anniversary of Central Indiana Community Foundation\, Big Car lights up the paddle boats that\, using human power to chug through the canal. The Paddlit (paddle it) project involves the people on the boats working as paddlers — maybe better called petalers — who’ll be able to alter the cadence of waterproof LED lights glowing on and off colorfully just above the water. In this way\, everybody who rents a paddle boat is a collaborator and performer.

The free activities start at 9 am with Mayor Hogsett’s welcome\, continues with a group workout\, the farmer’s market at 9:30 am\, a community picnic lunch\, afternoon games\, an evening beer garden and (at dark) a screening of Midnight in Paris — a film about place and culture and dreams. Also\, the Wagon of Wonders will be on site as well as games and activites from the Bike Hub YMCA. \nWith Placemaking Day\, we’re launching the second phase of the Spark initiative that uses place-based programming to help activate wonderful public spaces in the heart of our city — this time City Market and Monument Circle. We kick off the 2016 round of Spark — supported with the help of a major grant from the Southwest Airlines Heart of the Community program — on July 13. \nVISIT FACEBOOK FOR DETAILS:  https://www.facebook.com/events/147842148953036/
