You place objects — such as plants — on top of a piece of photo-treated paper\, and then use the sun to expose the paper. The result is an image that is an exact outline of the object. It’s a fun and magical way to engage photography! Although it may be new to modern people\, cyanotype has been around since photography was invented in the 1800s.\n\nCome explore the creative possibilities of this fascinating process with Indianapolis-based artist Asli Narin. Narin often incorporates cyanotype into her artistic practice. She will give a short talk about cyanotype at the beginning of each hour\, and then you will make your own cyanotypes with Narin’s assistance.\n\nWe will have some objects on hand to experiment with\, but feel free to bring your own objects. Flat items usually work best\, and cyanotype can be messy\, so precious things like family heirlooms should probably stay at home. All other necessary materials will be provided free at the workshop.\n\nThis activity is best suited for artists 7+ years old; minors must be accompanied by an adult.\n\nAsli Narin (1985\, Istanbul) is a visual artist and an educator based in Indianapolis\, US. Narin’s artistic practice is based on photography as well as video\, installation\, and performance\, inspired by nature and the cities. Taking inspiration from walking and wandering\, she explores the human experience through forms and abstractions. Her subjects are often the thresholds and dualities of life.\n\nImage: Anna Atkins is famous for these cyanotypes she made of British algae in the 1840s. And a key inspiration is the southwestern Indiana town\, New Harmony — location of multiple and varied utopian experiments.\n\nTHE PROGRAM\nThis idea started with visits by Big Car Collaborative/Tube Factory artspace curator\, Shauta Marsh\, and artist and writer Jim Walker\, to New Harmony over the past several years and conversations with artist\, writer\, and philanthropist Jeremy Efroymson — who lives\, part-time\, in New Harmony — and former New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art director Garry Holstein. Big Car will be there with our mobile museum and activities\,The Wagon of Wonders. \nAbout the Feast of Lanterns \nThe Feast of Lanterns is a historic festival based on the Near Eastside of Indianapolis. Its earliest incarnations in the late 1800s were of small gatherings and decorated front porches in nearby neighborhoods like Woodruff Place. By 1909 these neighborhood events had morphed in to a single\, larger festival that took place in Spades Park. Neighbors came out to hang paper lanterns—lit first by candles and later by electric lights. The park\, historic bandstand\, and numerous bridges were illuminated by the colorful lantern lights. Nearby homes would  participate by decorating their porches. As time passed—through World War I\, the Roaring 20s\, and Prohibition—the event continued to be celebrated. But by the 1940s the event was held only sporadically and eventually not at all. \nIn the early 2000s local neighbors from Windsor Park and Springdale were looking to begin an outdoor music festival and re-discovered the historic Feast of Lanterns festival. The theme of colorful lanterns lit throughout the park was incorporated with local music\,  craft vendors\, and neighborhood booths. Eventually the event was hosted by Near Eastside Community Organization (NESCO) for more than a decade. In 2015\, NESCO announced they would not be hosting Feast as part of their efforts to reorganize and refocus as an organization. This year’s Feast of Lanterns\, hosted by Lanterns Foundation\, brings a refocus on the origins of the event\, local neighbors and neighborhoods working together to not only put on a festival but also to build community. The Paddlit (paddle it) project involves the people on the boats working as paddlers — maybe better called petalers — who’ll be able to alter the cadence of waterproof LED lights glowing on and off colorfully just above the water.
