SUMMARY:Walking Wednesday-Public Art with Julia Muney Moore
DESCRIPTION:Public art is everywhere\, but sometimes we miss it when we are in a hurry or are quickly driving by. Take time to relax and enjoy our city’s public art in this themed walk led by Julia Muney Moore of the Arts Council of Indianapolis. \nMEET on the East Plaza of City Market. We don’t walk if the weather is terrible. Walks are free but bring some money if you’d like to stop for a snack or drink in the middle. \nFree and open to the public // All ages \nBrought to you by Spark Placemaking and Indianapolis City Market with support from Southwest Airlines and Project for Public Spaces through the Heart of the Community program. \nAbout Julia Muney Moore\nMoore is an arts administrator\, curator\, educator\, and art historian. She has curated\, selected\, and managed public art projects since 2000. Driven by a belief that public art should both inspire and reflect its community\, Julia’s favorite projects are those that challenge traditional approaches to bring a mixture of surprise\, thoughtfulness and joy into public space. \nAt the Arts Council\, Julia oversees community and civic public art projects\, public art master planning\, and ongoing programming to improve artists’ capacity to create public art. She is currently developing a new Public Art for Neighborhoods program with the City of Indianapolis\, integrating both grant funding for neighborhood organizations and percent-for-art-style installations in private development. \nPrior to her work at the Arts Council\, she served as the Director of Exhibitions and Artist Services at the Indianapolis Art Center\, curating over 250 gallery and public projects in 14 years. As the Public Art Administrator for Blackburn Architects\, Inc.\, she oversaw the selection\, fabrication and installation of public art in new construction; key projects included developing multi-million-dollar public art programs for Indianapolis International Airport and Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis\, and planning public art for cultural districts and other civic initiatives. Julia has also taught art history and art appreciation at colleges and universities in Central Indiana. She received her B.A. from Bryn Mawr College and her M.A. in Art History from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts\, in addition to a M.B.A. from Ball State University.

SUMMARY:The Pogue's Run Pursuit
DESCRIPTION:Who was George Pogue and what happened to him? Where did the Pogue’s Run waterway go? Let’s explore! \nIn conjunction with Spark Monument Circle\, the White River Festival\, and Reconnecting to Our Waterways\, Big Car Collaborative invites you to stoke your imagination and trek with us through the heart of downtown Indianapolis circa 1915. Together\, we will hunt for the historical path Pogue’s Run once carved\, meandering to the White River. \nAll adventurers will arrive at 6:30 p.m. to the Spark Welcome Trailer on the east side of Monument Circle for an brief\, fun and informative historical overview of George Pogue (c.1763–1821)\, Indy’s humble beginnings\, and the story of Pogue’s Run. \nA 90-minute walk will lead explorers along the historical banks of Pogue’s Run as previously charted by Pittsburgh based artist Sean Derry. Explorers will navigate old-timey maps along our modern city thoroughfares while pondering what life was like for residents along the White River tributary in centuries past. Explore the mysterious disappearance of George Pogue\, and the similar disappearance of the waterway bearing his name. Take an opportunity to purchase provisions during our journey. \nYou will ultimately walk away with: \n\nA broader understanding of the network of waterways Indy was built upon.\nA connected experience to Indy’s historical origins.\nConsideration for what must go into the responsible creation of a sustainable urban environment.\n\nParticipants are encouraged to dress in c. 1915 period appropriate clothing\, so don your parasols\, feathered hats\, suspenders\, bowler hats\, and canes. All ages are welcome! Strollers are welcome! This event is free and open to the public. \n*Join us the night prior for The Long Blue Line: Discussion with Artist Sean Derry at Flat 12 Bierworks.
