DESCRIPTION:Themed art classes for children 6 + every Wednesday of July. Classes will be mostly in English but Spanish can be used for children who are bilingual/Spanish speaking. Every week will be a new\, dynamic and sensory adventure with a small lesson at the beginning. We will learn about patterns\, shapes\, rhythm\, texture\, image\, line and color through a variety of media and engaging projects. Inspiration for art projects is drawn from the 50 Grand exhibition currently in the gallery at Tube Factory.\nYour child can join any time. New registrations will take place before class each week\, so plan to come a little early if it is your child’s first time in the class. Children will be broken into age groups and given an activity for their skill level. DESCRIPTION:With the lean\, long jab and agile step of a boxer\, Adrian Matejka delivers this knockout dramatization of the larger-than-life life of heavyweight champion Jack Johnson. In dexterous interpolating voices\, and in forms ranging from enveloping sonnets to prose letters and interviews\, Johnson emerges as a scrappy\, hard-edged hero—troubled by his own demons but determined to win the “fight of the century\,” a fight that underscored the bitter realities of racism in America. These poems don’t pull no punches. \nPresented by UIndy’s Social Practice Art MA program and Etchings Press\, a student-run publisher. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nThe legendary Jack Johnson (1878–1946) was a true American creation. The child of emancipated slaves\, he overcame the violent segregationism of Jim Crow\, challenging white boxers—and white America—to become the first African-American heavyweight world champion. The Big Smoke\, Adrian Matejka’s third work of poetry\, follows the fighter’s journey from poverty to the most coveted title in sports through the multi-layered voices of Johnson and the white women he brazenly loved. Matejka’s book is part historic reclamation and part interrogation of Johnson’s complicated legacy\, one that often misremembers the magnetic man behind the myth. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nAdrian Matejka is the author of The Devil’s Garden (Alice James Books\, 2003) and Mixology (Penguin\, 2009). He is the recipient of two Illinois Arts Council Literary Awards\, a National Poetry Series Award\, the New York/New England Award\, and a fellowship from the Lannan Foundation. He teaches at Indiana University and lives in Bloomington with his wife\, Stacey Lynn Brown\, and their daughter.

SUMMARY:Brick Street South Poetry Series: Abegunde
DESCRIPTION:Abegunde is a Memory Keeper\, ancestral priest in the Yoruba Orisa tradition\, and a Reiki Master with a focus on the recovery and healing of ancestral memory from the Earth and human body. She chooses to forget that words and days have limits. Instead\, she chooses to remember – and live by – the words of a young Black woman in the 5th grade: Poetry can change the world.  As a result\, she spends her days and dreamtime chanting silenced memories into spoken histories. On the weekdays\, when she isn’t birthing new words out of sound and images\, she shapeshifts into a professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies and the founding director of The Graduate Mentoring Center at Indiana University. Her ongoing research and subsequent creations help us understand how unresolved ancestral emotions shape the lives of descendants of the Middle Passage and the links between ancestral wounding\, contemporary violence\, and illness and disease. She will read from ​her work-in-progress Learning to Eat the Dead: Juba\, USA\, ​a meditation on visiting Juba\, South Sudan\, living in the United States\, and poetic transparency. \nBrick Street South Poetry Series features a poet and an open mic the third Thursday of every month.  Free admission and parking. SUMMARY:Larissa Hammond: the / a mind  the b mind
DESCRIPTION:the/a mind the b mind\, is a fully commissioned exhibit featuring four large scale paintings\, one in collaboration with poet Ariana Reines. \nThe exhibit is several years in the making. “Through the years this show has evolved\, my body has been attacking itself through my immune system\,” says Hammond. “I went down many paths with both my art and physical body before I finally reached a turning point.” \nThe paintings happened after a series of conversations with Reines. “We spoke about the silence women carry\, what it really means and feels like to give consent\, communications that result from being mixed race and culture in America\, the importance of ownership and protection over one’s own body\, taking care\, how crucial it is to identify as sane\, and the importance of relating to other people with love and humor as a way through any kind of opposition\,” says Hammond. \nThe paintings themselves are an exploration in communication using a collective unconscious that Hammond built through her writings alongside conversations with Reines. “This collective unconscious is a combination of my matrilineal cultural heritage (Afro-Caribbean)\, past experiences\, and direct feedback from my body as I recovered from a brain injury\,” says Hammond. \nBorn in Indianapolis\, IN\, Larissa Hammond studied Architecture and Linguistics at the University of Cincinnati before earning her BA from Portland State University. In 2012\, Hammond earned her MFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art + Oregon College of Art & Craft. Since graduating\, her thesis was purchased by conceptual artist Luis Camnitzer and she was named by Modern Painters Magazine as 1 of 25 Artists to Watch. Her first solo edition\, THE REDDENING\, was featured by Monograph Bookwerks and Triangular Press at the Codex International and LA Art Book Fairs. THE REDDENING was also purchased by the University of Iowa\, Indiana University\, and Oregon College of Art & Craft Rare / Artist Book Collections. \nBorn in Salem\, Massachusetts\, poet\, playwright\, and translator Ariana Reines earned a BA from Barnard College\, and completed graduate work at both Columbia University and the European Graduate School\, where she studied literature\, performance\, and philosophy. Her books of poetry include The Cow (2006)\, which won the Alberta Prize from Fence Books; Coeur de Lion (2007); and Mercury (2011). Her poems have been anthologized in Against Expression (2011) and Gurlesque (2010). Known for her interest in bodily experience\, the occult\, new media\, and the possibilities of the long or book-length form\, Reines has been described as “one of the crucial voices of her generation” by Michael Silverblatt on NPR’s Bookworm. \nMade possible by the Herbert Simon Family Foundation and Sun King Brewery.

DESCRIPTION:Ramps\, steps\, and rails are important things for homeowners and skateboarders alike to know how to make. At Bottom Level Tool Shop you can learn how to make these over a series of classes and be part of a small crew who’ll help neighbors in need. \nDuring the class you’ll build small skate and home items for Tube and elsewhere. By taking the class\, offered free in exchange for your help\, we’ll supply wood and hardware needed so you can also take what you make home for your own mini skate park or maybe to help around your house or the house of a neighbor of your choosing. \nThis class requires the prerequeisite Shop Safety class offered in the morning before this class. Shop safety usually has a cost but this is waived\, also\, with your commitment to help with this summer community home repair project we’re piloting at Big Car Collaborative with support from INHP.

DESCRIPTION:One of the great lost masterpieces of Japanese animation\, never before officially released in the U.S.\, BELLADONNA OF SADNESS is a mad\, swirling\, psychedelic light-show of medieval tarot-card imagery with horned demons\, haunted forests and La Belle Dame Sans Merci with J.R.R. Tolkien influences. \nWe will be discussing this film\, the role witchcraft and superstition have played in gender roles throughout history\, all in relation to our exhibit Larissa Hammond: the/ a mind the b mind. \nThe last film in the Animerama trilogy produced by the godfather of Japanese anime & manga\, Osamu Tezuka and directed by his longtime collaborator Eiichi Yamamoto (ASTRO BOY and KIMBA THE WHITE LION)\, BELLADONNA unfolds as a series of spectacular still watercolor paintings that bleed and twist together. A young woman\, Jeanne (voiced by Aiko Nagayama) is assaulted by the local lord on her wedding night. To take revenge\, she makes a pact with the Devil himself (voiced by Tatsuya Nakadai\, from Akira Kurosawa’s RAN) who appears as a sprite and transforms her into a black-robed vision of madness and desire. \nExtremely transgressive\, BELLADONNA is fueled by a mind-blowing Japanese psych rock soundtrack by noted avant-garde jazz composer Masahiko Satoh. The film has been newly restored by Cinelicious Pics using the original 35 mm camera negative and sound elements and including over 8 minutes of surreal footage cut from the negative. On par with Rene Laloux’s FANTASTIC PLANET and Ralph Bakshi’s WIZARDS as an LSD-stoked 1970s head trip\, BELLADONNA marks a major rediscovery for animation fans. If Led Zeppelin had a favorite film\, this would be it. In other words\, Stairway to Hell.

She is the grateful recipient of an NEA Creative Writing Fellowship in Poetry. DESCRIPTION:November 3-January 20 \nOpen every first Friday 6-10 p.m. \n\nKeeper of My Mothers’ Dreams expands the dialogues began in Crowe Storm’s works Her Name is Laura Nelson and Be/Coming with newly commissioned pieces: Poems\, Origin and Sister Song.\n\n\n\nOn the South wall of the main gallery is Her Name Is Laura Nelson. It is Quilt I from The Lynch Quilts Project Series which explores the history and ramifications of racial violence in America\, particularly lynching\, through the textile tradition of quilting. Crowe Storm started the series 15 years ago. Her Name is Laura Nelson explores the intersection of lynching and gender violence. \n\n\n\nIn the North section of the main gallery is Be/Coming\, the first in the series Masquerade Americana\, a collaboration between Crowe Storm and Maria Eliza Hamilton Abegunde that began in 2007. This piece is rooted in the various masquerade traditions found throughout Africa\, particularly Gelede (Gail-lah-day) and Egungun (Ay-goon-goon) of the Yoruba in Nigeria. Gelede celebrates female mystical power\, while Egungun honors one’s ancestors.The Masquerade Americana series addresses historical and contemporary social ills and in/justices rooted in the American context from a Black / African-American lens.\n\n\n\nOrigin\, in the west section of the main gallery\, is a bronze casting of the pelvic bone of an unknown African American woman. \n\n\n \n\n\nOn the East wall is the poetry of Abegunde. The poems Be/Coming\, Laura Nelson Speaks\, Origin\, and Birth Song were written specifically for the ongoing collaboration with Crowe Storm. The remaining poems\, The Answer to Your Question and Supplication\, are earlier works that call attention to the historical erasure and disappearance of young Black girls and women. Supplication is also a prayer to the Yoruba deity Osun that combines elements of oriki for Osun (praise names) with a plea for guidance to find\, in this case\, Tionda and Diamond Bradley who were reported disappeared/missing on July 6\, 2001.\n\n\n \n\n\nThe writings and libation bowl add new layers to the experiences of remembering words and performances that examine how the abuse\, loss\, and commodification of one’s womanhood and humanity can be transformed through processes that lead to healing and the rebirthing and re/making of identity. \n\n\n \n\n\nIn the installation room is Sister Song\, grounded within the context of community co-creation efforts\, the bronze womb shapes were given to selected artists to complete their transformation. \n\n\n \n\n\nEach piece exhibited in Keeper of My Mothers’ Dreams was developed with the hands of many.\n\n\nAbout Lashawnda Crowe Storm \nIf life were a photo\, then Crowe Storm’s artwork would be its negative\, seeking to explore those aspects in our society that have been ignored or forgotten such as history\, lynching\, misogyny\, slavery and suicide. Her art is a form of social work and she uses it to open doorways to community dialogue\, which is the first step to healing\, which in itself leads to wider social change. Through her work\, a voice is given to the marginalized people and disregarded aspects of our society. \nAbout Maria E Hamilton Abegunde \nMaria E Hamilton Abegunde is a Memory Keeper\, poet\, ancestral priest in the Yoruba Orisa tradition\, and a Reiki Master. Her research and creative work respectfully approach the Earth and human bodies as sites of memory\, and always with the understanding that memory never dies\, is subversive\, and can be recovered to transform transgenerational trauma and pain into peace and power. She is a visiting lecturer in the department of African American and African Diaspora Studies and the founding director of The Graduate Mentoring Center at Indiana University. \nA series of events accompany the exhibition:\nDecember 3\, 3-5 p.m. \nBeComing Whole: It Takes a Village to Heal a Community \nJoin artists featured in Sister Song for a discussion about how the project developed and what it means to become whole through the process of making art that represents their own births. The artists will share why they accepted the invitation to participate\, why they selected the “womb” that they did\, how and why they selected the materials\, what they learned about themselves in the process\, and what was the most transformative part of this creation. \nDecember 9\, 3-5 p.m. \n\nJanuary 13\, 3-5 p.m. \nAfriye Wekandodis: Telling Our Stories to Be Free \nSongs for Laura Nelson (Performance) \nSinger\, performer and Sister Song womb-maker\, Afriye We-kandodis will present a two-part performance examining the themes present in Keeper of My Mothers’ Dreams. Sista Yo Mama U n Me Too shares the story of violation then reclamation and transformation as an enslaved woman grapples rape and how she spoke life into the spirit of a fellow tribesman who was used to violate her.   Through the performance\,I Am Laura Nelson she’ll bring voice and life to Laura Nelson. \n\nJanuary 20\, 3-5pm \nKeeping our Mothers’ Dreams Alive \nFor many of us\, our mothers never spoke their dreams out loud. Sometimes\, they did not dare dream them. We\, however\, are the ones they waited and are waiting for. We also have our own dreams. The power of dreamtime and the word are this: to remind us who we are\, to soothe our souls\, and to create futures that break away from the past but do not forget them.
