The items in the reliquary are a sampling of those that I have received throughout my life. The things in this room are two ends of a relationship\, and a connection that holds them together. His program starts at the beginning of his journey to his speech for the USFWS in 2009 at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown\, WV.

DESCRIPTION:Create a positive Pepe The Frog as part of a community action event project that a group of middle schoolers are hosting at Tube.\n“Pepe is a cartoon frog created by Matt Furie in 2005. Pepe has\, for most of his life\, been completely innocent\, blessed with the particular brand of dignity conferred by implacable chill. He had a catchphrase (“Feels good man”)\, and\, in 2006\, a starring role (alongside his roommates Andy\, Brett\, and Landwolf) in Furie’s book Boy’s Club. Gradually\, he began to be appropriated by others on the internet\, and it was sometimes a little weird\, though generally harmless enough. \nBy the summer of 2015\, Furie had some complaints about Pepe’s repurposing. That July\, he told Vice’s Sean T. Collins that he liked some of what the internet had done with his creation\, but didn’t understand why Pepe was so often drawn hugging the mysterious Feels Guy\, and with brown lips and a blue shirt. Reasonable complaints. You should hear what my parents say about me. \nMore recently\, for reasons that really aren’t exceptionally clear\, Pepe was adopted as a kind of mascot by the alt-right. White supremacists\, anti-semites\, and others have made truly hateful cartoons in which Pepe says horrendous things (google “Pepe + [name of minority]” at your own risk)\, and the heretofore innocuous frog emoji has started appearing in some people’s Twitter handles as an indication of their hate-fueled politics. When Roger Stone and Eric Trump shared their Expendables/Deplorables mash-up meme\, Pepe got the coveted Schwarzenegger spot. Pepe has been declared a hate symbol by the Anti-Defamation League\, and the Hillary Clinton campaign devoted an entire webpage to unpacking his significance.” \nFurie’s publisher\, Fantagraphics\, released a statement addressing the situation. They are appalled\, citing the “significant emotional and financial harm” being done to Furie:\nHaving your creation appropriated without consent is never something an artist wants to suffer\, but having it done in the service of such repellent hatred—and thereby dragging your name into the conversation\, as well—makes it considerably more troubling. \nFantagraphics Books wants to state for the record that the one\, true Pepe the frog\, as created by the human being and artist Matt Furie\, is a peaceful cartoon amphibian who represents love\, acceptance\, and fun. Both creator and creation reject the nihilism fueling Pepe’s alt-right appropriators\, and all of us at Fantagraphics encourage you to help us reclaim Pepe as a symbol of positivity and togetherness\, and to stand by Matt Furie. \nWe encourage reporters and others citing Furie as the character’s creator to also note that he condemns these illegal representations of his character. SUMMARY:Dr. Jeffrey Meldrum-Discovery Channel expert and Sasquatch author
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jeffrey Meldrum\, an expert on foot morphology and locomotion in primates\, will give a talk\, answer questions and sign books. His appearance is in conjunction with Tube Factory’s Hairy Man exhibit. Meldrum contributed his field evidence\, including special hand and foot casts\, to the exhibit. Admission to the talk is $5 \nMeldrum is a Full Professor of Anatomy and Anthropology and a Professor of the Department of Anthropology at Idaho State University. He is also Adjunct Professor of Occupational and Physical Therapy. \nMeldrum received his B.S. in zoology specializing in vertebrate locomotion at Brigham Young University (BYU) in 1982\, his M.S. at BYU in 1984 and a Ph.D. in anatomical sciences\, with an emphasis in biological anthropology\, from Stony Brook University in 1989 (then referred to as State University of New York at Stony Brook). He held the position of postdoctoral visiting assistant professor at Duke University Medical Center from 1989 to 1991. Meldrum worked at Northwestern University’s Department of Cell\, Molecular and Structural Biology for a short while in 1993 before joining the faculty of Idaho State University where he currently teaches. \nMeldrum authored Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science which is the first book to be written by an academic and provides an objective look at the field. \nMeldrum has also published numerous academic papers ranging from vertebrate evolutionary morphology\, the emergence of bipedal locomotion in modern humans and Sasquatch (Bigfoot) and is a co-editor of a series of books on paleontology. Meldrum also coedited From Biped to Strider: The Emergence of Modern Human Walking with Charles E. Hilton. He edited the textbook From Biped to Strider (Springer\, 2004). \nMeldrum has attracted media attention due to his interest in Bigfoot. Skeptic Brian Dunning writes that “The work of responsible scientists like Dr. Meldrum is exactly what true skeptics should be asking the Bigfoot community for\, not criticizing him for it.”\nMeldrum was present at a 2011 conference in Siberia to discuss the Russian wildman. He acknowledged that the results of the Russian field trip to the cave site were most likely fraudulent. He suggested that the supposed evidence found was simply an attempt by local government officials to drum up publicity.\nMeldrum has also studied and commented upon issues of genetics and the Book of Mormon including his book Who Are the Children of Lehi? written with Trent D. DESCRIPTION:Marc DeWerth of Columbia Station\, Ohio is a longtime Ohio Bigfoot Investigator\, actively pursuing Bigfoot creatures throughout the country since 1990. A longtime investigator with the BFRO (Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization)\, he is the President of the Ohio Bigfoot Organization. \nDeWerth’s lecture “The Midwest Sasquatch” will focus on the most up to date sighting reports in the Indiana\, Ohio\, Illinois\, and other Midwestern states. He will also share some of the most compelling audio recordings his team recorded in 2016 in an area of multiple sighting reports that are sure to intrigue even the biggest skeptic. DeWerth has interviewed over 200 witnesses that claimed seeing a large\, hair covered creature roaming the Ohio woodlands and surrounding Midwestern states. A participant in many public and private expeditions over the years throughout Ohio and the Midwest\, he’s quite confident in the existence of Sasquatch throughout North America.\nCurrently\, DeWerth and his group The Ohio Bigfoot Organization are the hosts of the Ohio Bigfoot Conference\, a nationally recognized event that takes place every spring at Salt Fork State Park. DESCRIPTION:The truth is out there. And so is the art. Starting Feb. 3\, a partnership with the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art (iMOCA) brings the work of 13 contemporary artists exploring the idea of UFOs and the paranormal to Tube Factory (1125 Cruft St.) in its expanded gallery space in the factory’s former lower-level garage. \niMOCA’s Museum of Real and Odd\, curated by Jeremy Efroymson\, is a commissioned exhibit with artists from around the country making new work for the show. After an open call for submissions received 250 proposals\, Efroymson selected the 13 artists: Nayda Collazo-Llorens in collaboration with Ander Monson\, Scott Raymond & Heather Abels\, Jennifer Scheuer\, Robert Thurlow\, Katy Unger\, Ed Sykes\, Alex Grabiec\, Julio Orta\, Pato Herbert\, Cassandra Klos\, Josh Haines\, and Michael Jordan\, aka Alkemi. \nWhile enthusiastic about all the work\, Efroymson is especially excited about Julio Orta’s piece Museum of Art on the Moon. “It was commissioned for this show and is an interesting concept\,” says Efroymson. “Orta\, originally from Mexico and living in L.A.\, is drawing conceptual architectural plans and has even purchased land for the museum on the moon. I haven’t seen the final piece but I’m looking forward to it. He can continue on with this project after this show.” \nEfroymson feels high-caliber artists are well poised to remove some of the negative associations with the unknown. “The folklore and mythology of the paranormal has really saturated our society\,” he said. “Especially with the ghost hunter shows on television and the prevalence of the topic in movies.  I remember the movie Poltergeist from my childhood\, which really scared me. While we still have scary movies\, I think maybe we now have a more open view to paranormal experiences of a positive nature. I’ve seen shows and artwork that deal with these topics\, but they are not always of the best quality. I wanted to curate a show on these topics with high quality art and artists.” \nThe exhibit comes down April 15. SUMMARY:The Hairy Man
DESCRIPTION:Since 1721\, newspapers in the United States have shared reports of sightings and interactions with beings we call Bigfoot. In Indiana\, these sightings have been reported from as close to Indianapolis as the Morgan Monroe State Forest and continue to occur today. The Hairy Man\, a historical cryptozoology exhibit curated by author and Sasquatch expert Christopher Murphy\, will open Feb. 3 from 6-10 p.m.\, at Tube Factory artspace\, (1125 Cruft St). The exhibit will run through April 15 and admission is free. \nThe Hairy Man\, features artifacts\, stories and evidence of Bigfoot’s existence with a focus on the creature as a part of cultural conversations through the centuries. This includes an emphasis on the indigenous people of North America. Murphy\, who is regarded as one of the top researchers of the history of Bigfoot\, originally assembled this collection that contains a 400-pound\, 9-foot-tall iron human skeleton\, model of a Bigfoot skull\, footprint casts\, and more. The Museum of Vancouver\, British Columbia\, exhibited much of this collection in 2004 and 2005. And it has since traveled all over the west coast. \nThe Hairy Man explores the facets of what Murphy describes as “a cultural phenomenon on the fringes of science.” Some people believe Sasquatch to be mythical\, while others see this as an elusive hominid relative of humans and other higher primates. Either way\, people have a lengthy history of creating and sharing Sasquatch lore. The exhibit addresses ancient legends from North America and Asia (where it is known as Yeti or the abominable snowman) as well as recent evidence and sightings. \nBig Car is excited to be part of bringing this exploration and related conversations to Indianapolis. “Tube Factory is about people and place\,” said Big Car CEO Jim Walker. “And the human activity of exploring and examining the mysteries of life are a vital part of our culture — in the past and today.” \nMade possible by the Efroymson Family Fund

DESCRIPTION:Kelley’s 28-minute video project pieced together a character study of the Banana Man\, a character from the children’s television show “Captain Kangaroo.” Having never watched the Banana Man himself\, Kelley enlisted his childhood friends to recount their memories of him\, memories which were weaved together into a fragmented narrative. \nWrites Kelley: “This is my only truly solo video project. The tape is an exploration of character and was done in direct reaction to my performance work at the time\, which was characterless. Video seemed a good way\, by virtue of it not operating in ‘real’ time\, of dealing with character and psychological motivation. ‘The Banana Man’ was a minor figure on a children’s television show I watched in my youth. I\, myself\, never saw this performer. Everything I know about him was told to me by my friends. The Banana Man is an attempt at constructing the psychology of the character — problematized by the fact that the character is already a fictional one\, and by the fact that none of my observations were direct ones.” \n1983\, 28:15 min\, color\, sound\n\nDiscussion to follow screening.

DESCRIPTION:Day Is Done is a carnivalesque opus\, a genre-smashing epic in which vampires\, dancing Goths\, hillbillies\, mimes and demons come together in a kind of subversive musical theater/variety revue by artist Mike Kelley. Running over two-and-a-half hours\, this riotous theatrical spectacle unfolds as a series of episodes that form a loose\, fractured narrative. The video comprises parts 2 through 32 of Kelley’s multi-faceted project Extracurricular Activity Projective Reconstructions\, in which trauma\, abuse and repressed memory are refracted through personal and mass-cultural experience. The source material is a series of high school yearbook photographs of “extracurricular activities\,” specifically those that represent what Kelley has termed “socially accepted rituals of deviance.” Kelley then stages video narratives around these found images.\nIn Day Is Done\, these restagings take the form of “folk entertainments” that Kelley memorably subverts. Featuring characters such as Motivational Vampire\, Morose Ghoul and Devil/Barber\, much of the action—antic song-and-dance numbers and dramatic scenes\, with Satan as emcee—takes place in a generic school gymnasium and a wooded landscape.\nWrites Kelley: “For this project\, I limited myself to specific iconographic motifs taken from the following files: Religious Performances\, Thugs\, Dance\, Hick and Hillbilly\, Halloween and Goth\, Satanic\, Mimes\, and Equestrian Events. Many of the source photographs are of people in costume singing or dancing\, so the resulting tapes are generally music videos. In fact\, I consider Day Is Done to be a kind of fractured feature-length musical…. The experience of viewing it is somewhat akin to channel-surfing on television.”\nThe video reconstructions were originally seen within an ambitious\, sprawling exhibition of video/sculpture installations\, photographs\, sets\, props and drawings at the Gagosian Gallery in New York in 2005; the videos were incorporated into 25 sculptural viewing stations. Writes Kelley\, “My intention was to create a kind of spatialized filmic montage: a feature-length film made up of multiple simultaneous and sequential scenes playing in architectural space.” \nWe will discuss Kelley’s techniques for creating psychic distortions and the perceived relationship between the person of the artist and the artistic persona.

He has presented his work at Yugong Art Museum\, the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art\, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art\, White Flag Project Space and more. Priest was a recipient of the Efroymson Contemporary Art Fellowship and is a CICF renewal Fellow. He is a Visiting Professor of Sculpture at Herron School of Art and Design and DePauw University. He is also owner of Kurb Design\, a fabrication and design studio. Priest received his BFA from Herron School of Art and Design in 2004 and MFA from Washington University in St. Louis in 2007. \nImage: “Performance 2016. DESCRIPTION:If you love coffee\, this event is for you. \nKristin Van Busum\, founder of Project Alianza (www.projectalianza.org)\, will host a Discussion + Screening of La Cosecha de Miseria (The Harvest of Misery)\, a documentary produced by Telemundo\, highlighting the global problem of child labor that continues to impact the coffee supply chain. \nThe documentary is a peek into the rarely explored reality of the million of children who are born and grow up on coffee farms in Latin America. Labeled by industry as “the most vulnerable actors in the coffee supply chain\,” coffee farm kids exemplify resilience\, resourcefulness and the spirit needed to break out of the generational poverty in which they were born. Yet\, more than half will not get the support or services they need to make it beyond third grade. Learn more about grass roots\, community-driven efforts to give kids a chance at education and a better tomorrow. \nThe event is a collaboration between Project Alianza and the Big Car Collaborative.

DESCRIPTION:Selected by Cranbrook Art Museum curator Laura Mott to facilitate her interview with artist Scott Hocking\, who is currently exhibiting at Tube Factory artspace\, we will screen The Five Obstructions and The Perfect Human then reference the interview between her and Hocking. \nThe Five Obstructions is a 2003 Danish documentary film directed by Lars von Trier and Jørgen Leth. The film is conceived as a documentary\, but incorporates lengthy sections of experimental films produced by the filmmakers.
