DESCRIPTION:Attia’s recent film The Body’s Legacies (Part 1: The Objects) is an extensive account of testimonies by academics\, scholars\, collectors\, and museum directors from Canada\, the US\, Ivory Coast\, and many other locations\, relating the histories behind bodies and artifacts from the world over. \nThis screening is part of the Bauhaus Imaginista: Collected Research exhibition. \nProject partners:\nGoethe-Institut\, Bauhaus Kooperation\, Haus der Kulturen der Welt. \nFunded by:\nDie Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien\, Auswärtiges Amt\, Kulturstiftung des Bundes. \nOn the occasion of 100 Jahre bauhaus (100 Years of Bauhaus). \nKader Attia (b. 1970\, France)\, grew up in Paris and in Algeria. Preceding his studies at the École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Duperré and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris\, and at Escola Massana\, Centre d’Art i Disseny in Barcelona\, he spent several years in Congo and in South America. \nThe experience with these different cultures\, the histories of which over centuries have been characterised by rich trading traditions\, colonialism and multi-ethnic societies\, has fostered Kader Attia’s intercultural and interdisciplinary approach of research. For many years\, he has been exploring the perspective that societies have on their history\, especially as regards experiences of deprivation and suppression\, violence and loss\, and how this affects the evolving of nations and individuals — each of them being connected to collective memory. \nHis socio-cultural research has led Kader Attia to the notion of Repair\, a concept he has been developing philosophically in his writings and symbolically in his oeuvre as a visual artist. With the principle of Repair being a constant in nature — thus also in humanity —\, any system\, social institution or cultural tradition can be considered as an infinite process of Repair\, which is closely linked to loss and wounds\, to recuperation and re-appropriation. Repair reaches far beyond the subject and connects the individual to gender\, philosophy\, science\, and architecture\, and also involves it in evolutionary processes in nature\, culture\, myth and history. \nIn 2016\, Kader Attia founded La Colonie\, a space in Paris to share ideas and to provide an agora for vivid discussion. Focussing on decolonialisation not only of peoples but also of knowledge\, attitudes and practices\, it aspires to de-compartmentalise knowledge by a trans-cultural\, trans-disciplinary and trans-generational approach. Driven by the urgency of social and cultural reparations\, it aims to reunite which has been shattered\, or drift apart. \nKader Attia’s work has been shown in  group shows and biennials such as the 12thShanghai Biennial; the 12th Gwangju Biennial; the 12th Manifesta\, Palermo; the 57th Venice Biennial; dOCUMENTA(13) in Kassel; Met Breuer\, New York; Kunsthalle Wien; MoMA\, New York; Tate Modern\, London; Centre Pompidou\, Paris; or The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York — just to name a few. Notable solo exhibitions include “The Museum of Emotion”\, The Hayward Gallery\, London; “Scars Remind Us that Our Past is Real”\, Fundacio Joan Miro\, Barcelona; “Roots also grow in concrete”\, MacVal in Vitry-sur-Seine; „The Field of Emotion“\, The Power Plant\, Toronto; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Sydney; “Repairing the Invisible”\, SMAK\, Ghent; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Sydney; “Sacrifice and Harmony”\, Museum für Moderne Kunst\, Frankfurt; “The Injuries are Here”\, Musée Cantonal des Beaux Arts de Lausanne; “Contre Nature”\, Beirut Art Center; “Continuum of Repair: The Light of Jacob’s Ladder”\, Whitechapel Gallery\, London; and KW Institute for Contemporary Art\, Berlin. \nIn 2016\, Kader Attia was awarded with the Marcel Duchamp Prize\, followed by the Prize of the Miró Foundation\, Barcelona\, and the Yanghyun Art Prize\, Seoul\, in 2017.

Safeway will be open so you can grab dinner at the cafe to enjoy with the movie. \nFollow the adventures of Satsuki and her four-year-old sister Mei when they move into a new home in the countryside. To their delight\, they discover that their new neighbor is Totoro\, a mysterious forest spirit who can only be seen by children. Totoro introduces them to extradordinary characters — including a cat that doubles as a bus! — and takes them on an incredible journey.  \nThere will be around 50 chairs that are free to use but we also recommend you bring your own if you are arriving later. \nSpecial thanks to Safeway\, The Arts Council of Indianapolis\, and Transit Drives Indy\, and Public House Cinema for making this event possible. DESCRIPTION:One of the great lost masterpieces of Japanese animation\, never before officially released in the U.S.\, BELLADONNA OF SADNESS is a mad\, swirling\, psychedelic light-show of medieval tarot-card imagery with horned demons\, haunted forests and La Belle Dame Sans Merci with J.R.R. Tolkien influences. \nWe will be discussing this film\, the role witchcraft and superstition have played in gender roles throughout history\, all in relation to our exhibit Larissa Hammond: the/ a mind the b mind. \nThe last film in the Animerama trilogy produced by the godfather of Japanese anime & manga\, Osamu Tezuka and directed by his longtime collaborator Eiichi Yamamoto (ASTRO BOY and KIMBA THE WHITE LION)\, BELLADONNA unfolds as a series of spectacular still watercolor paintings that bleed and twist together. A young woman\, Jeanne (voiced by Aiko Nagayama) is assaulted by the local lord on her wedding night. To take revenge\, she makes a pact with the Devil himself (voiced by Tatsuya Nakadai\, from Akira Kurosawa’s RAN) who appears as a sprite and transforms her into a black-robed vision of madness and desire. \nExtremely transgressive\, BELLADONNA is fueled by a mind-blowing Japanese psych rock soundtrack by noted avant-garde jazz composer Masahiko Satoh. The film has been newly restored by Cinelicious Pics using the original 35 mm camera negative and sound elements and including over 8 minutes of surreal footage cut from the negative. On par with Rene Laloux’s FANTASTIC PLANET and Ralph Bakshi’s WIZARDS as an LSD-stoked 1970s head trip\, BELLADONNA marks a major rediscovery for animation fans. If Led Zeppelin had a favorite film\, this would be it. In other words\, Stairway to Hell.

As a young child Inocente and her family immigrated to the US from Mexico. After her father’s arrest and deportation for domestic violence\, most of Inocente’s childhood was spent moving from one homeless shelter to the next. When she was 12 years old Inocente discovered the power of art\, and since then she has been able to use the arts as a vehicle to rise above many great life challenges. Despite her sometimes bleak surroundings\, her brightly colored art represents a world of survival\, love and hope. Her story is the subject of the Oscar-winning film “INOCENTE”\, which depicts her life and art at age 15. DESCRIPTION:Kelley’s 28-minute video project pieced together a character study of the Banana Man\, a character from the children’s television show “Captain Kangaroo.” Having never watched the Banana Man himself\, Kelley enlisted his childhood friends to recount their memories of him\, memories which were weaved together into a fragmented narrative. \nWrites Kelley: “This is my only truly solo video project. The tape is an exploration of character and was done in direct reaction to my performance work at the time\, which was characterless. Video seemed a good way\, by virtue of it not operating in ‘real’ time\, of dealing with character and psychological motivation. ‘The Banana Man’ was a minor figure on a children’s television show I watched in my youth. I\, myself\, never saw this performer. DESCRIPTION:Day Is Done is a carnivalesque opus\, a genre-smashing epic in which vampires\, dancing Goths\, hillbillies\, mimes and demons come together in a kind of subversive musical theater/variety revue by artist Mike Kelley. Running over two-and-a-half hours\, this riotous theatrical spectacle unfolds as a series of episodes that form a loose\, fractured narrative. The video comprises parts 2 through 32 of Kelley’s multi-faceted project Extracurricular Activity Projective Reconstructions\, in which trauma\, abuse and repressed memory are refracted through personal and mass-cultural experience. The source material is a series of high school yearbook photographs of “extracurricular activities\,” specifically those that represent what Kelley has termed “socially accepted rituals of deviance.” Kelley then stages video narratives around these found images.\nIn Day Is Done\, these restagings take the form of “folk entertainments” that Kelley memorably subverts. Featuring characters such as Motivational Vampire\, Morose Ghoul and Devil/Barber\, much of the action—antic song-and-dance numbers and dramatic scenes\, with Satan as emcee—takes place in a generic school gymnasium and a wooded landscape.\nWrites Kelley: “For this project\, I limited myself to specific iconographic motifs taken from the following files: Religious Performances\, Thugs\, Dance\, Hick and Hillbilly\, Halloween and Goth\, Satanic\, Mimes\, and Equestrian Events. Many of the source photographs are of people in costume singing or dancing\, so the resulting tapes are generally music videos. In fact\, I consider Day Is Done to be a kind of fractured feature-length musical…. The experience of viewing it is somewhat akin to channel-surfing on television.”\nThe video reconstructions were originally seen within an ambitious\, sprawling exhibition of video/sculpture installations\, photographs\, sets\, props and drawings at the Gagosian Gallery in New York in 2005; the videos were incorporated into 25 sculptural viewing stations. Writes Kelley\, “My intention was to create a kind of spatialized filmic montage: a feature-length film made up of multiple simultaneous and sequential scenes playing in architectural space.” \nWe will discuss Kelley’s techniques for creating psychic distortions and the perceived relationship between the person of the artist and the artistic persona.

Based on the 1953 novel of the same name by Davis Grubb\, it was adapted for the screen by James Agee and Laughton. The plot focuses on a corrupt reverend-turned-serial killer who attempts to charm an unsuspecting widow and steal $10\,000 hidden by her executed husband. \nThe novel and film draw on the true story of Harry Powers\, hanged in 1932 for the murder of two widows and three children in Clarksburg\, West Virginia. The film’s lyrical and expressionistic style with its leaning on the silent era sets it apart from other Hollywood films of the 1940s and 1950s\, and it has influenced later directors such as David Lynch\, Martin Scorsese\, Terrence Malick\, Jim Jarmusch\, Spike Lee\, and the Coen brothers. \nIn 1992\, The Night of the Hunter was deemed “culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. The influential film magazine Cahiers du cinéma selected The Night of the Hunter in 2008 as the second-best film of all time\, behind Citizen Kane.

SUMMARY:Latino Americans: Peril and Promise (1980-2000)
DESCRIPTION:In the 80s the nature of the Latino Diaspora changes again. From Cuba a second wave of refugees to United States – the Mariel exodus – floods Miami . The same decade sees the sudden arrival of hundreds of thousands of Central Americans (Salvadorans\, Guatemalans\, and Nicaraguans) fleeing death squads and mass murders at home like activist\, Carlos Vaquerano. By the early 1990s\, a political debate over illegal immigration – has begun. Globalization\, empowered by NAFTA\, means that as U.S. manufacturers move south\, Mexican workers head north in record numbers. A backlash ensues: tightened borders\, anti-bilingualism\, state laws to declare all illegal immigrants felons. But a sea change is underway: the coalescence of a new phenomenon called Latino American culture-as Latinos spread geographically and make their mark in music\, sports\, politics\, business\, and education. Gloria Estefan leads the Miami Sound Machine creating cross over hits in Spanish and English. Oscar de la Hoya\, a Mexican-American boxer from L.A.\, becomes an Olympic gold medalist and the nation’s Golden Boy. Is a new Latino world being created here as the Latino population and influence continues to grow? Alternatively\, will Latinos in America eventually assimilate into invisibility\, as other groups have done so many times? Latinos present a challenge and an opportunity for the United States. America’s largest and youngest growing sector of the population presents what project advisor Professor Marta Tienda calls\, The Hispanic Moment.Their success could determine the growth of the United States in the twenty-first century; however their failure\, contributing to an underclass\, could also pull this country down. The key\, according to Tienda and Eduardo J. SUMMARY:Latino Americans:The New Latinos (1946-1965)
DESCRIPTION:Until World War II\, Latino immigration to the United States was overwhelmingly Mexican-American. Now three new waves bring large-scale immigration from Puerto Rico\, Cuba\, and the Dominican Republic. As the Puerto Rican government implements a historic overhaul over a million Puerto Ricans are encouraged to leave for the US mainland\, to alleviate the economic pressure. A young Juanita Sanabria arrives in New York\, works hard in the garment district\, but encounters hostility and discrimination. Ethnic tensions explode in youth gang warfare depicted in films like West Side Story\, etching the stereotype of the knife wielding Puerto Rican in the American consciousness. \nIn the film\, Rita Moreno plays the role of Anita and wins an Oscar. But for most Puerto Ricans empowerment remains elusive. A young Puerto Rican lawyer\, Herman Badillo\, takes on the political establishment\, opening the door for unprecedented Puerto Rican participation in electoral politics. In the early 60s\, the first Cubans flee the left-wing Castro regime\, a relatively white\, middle-class flight that soon forms a refugee enclave in Miami. A child of 11 at the time\, Gustavo Perez Firmat believes like most refugees\, that it is only a matter of weeks before the American government will wrest Cuba from the Communist regime. But Castro survives. Maria de los Angeles Torres is only six years old when she leaves Havana without her parents\, one of 14\,000 children are smuggled out through an underground network. Unable to leave legally\, Manuel Capo and his two military age sons – make a dramatic journey to the US. With skills honed in the family furniture business in Cuba and support from the federal government\, the Capos build thriving business marketing to the growing Cuban population. \nIn 1965\, fearing another Communist takeover in the Caribbean\, President Johnson sends Marines to the Dominican Republic\, triggering a third wave of immigration. With a US visa in hand\, 20 year-old university student\, Eligio Peña\, flees to New York. Eventually he brings his family to New York as Dominicans build a new home in Washington Heights. Julia Alvarez would take the immigrant experience – her own and that of her fellow Dominicans – to unprecedented literary heights in How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents. In her work\, she explores the hybrid identity taking shape in a new generation of Latinos\, who are now demanding their place in America. \nLatino Americans: 5oo Years of History\, a public programming initiative produced by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA)\, is part of the NEH initiative\, The Common Good: Humanities in the Public Square.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the screening of the fifth installment of Latino Americans documentary series.\nFor part five of the documentary will have the oportunity to converse after the screening with Monica A. Medina Ph.D. Clinical Associate Professor IU School of Education – IUPUI. \nMonica A. Medina Ph.D. is a Clinical Associate Professor of curriculum and instruction and the Coordinator for the Master’s in Urban Education at the IU School of Education. Her research centers on teacher preparation for urban schools\, full service community schools and the development of University assisted schools. Dr. Medina works extensively in the area of school and community relationships and particularly the operations of full service community schools. She has led the School of Education involvement at the George Washington Community High School (GWCS) and guides pre-service teachers from IUPUI on-site while they are assisting in the classrooms. Her university courses are taught in schools or community centers to create authentic cultural experiences for her students. In 2008 and 2014\, she co-authored a five-year grants to the US Department of education and was awarded $2.45 million and $2.2 million to advance the development a full service community schools in the near west side of Indianapolis. \nIn 2012\, IUPUI received an award from the University of Pennsylvania\, Netter Center to develop a regional Center for University-Assisted Community Schools\, a project involving the IUPUI Center for Service and Learning with collaborative facilitators\, including Dr. Medina. The IUPUI-based center assists universities and schools in with implementation of university-assisted community schools strategies. \nDr. Medina has held various volunteer leadership positions in the community and was awarded a Sagamore of the Wabash from Governor Evan Bayh. Currently\, she is a board member of the Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis and Concord Neighborhood Center. She served as the Chair of La Plaza Board of Directors\, and was a founding member and former chair of the Indiana Latino Institute. In 2014\, Dr. Medina was the recipient of the Indiana University Latino Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award and the IUPUI Chancellors Award for Excellence in Civic Engagement. In 2013\, she receive the Latina Educator of the Year Award from Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard. Congressman André Carson and Citizens Energy Group also recognized her work in the community as one of the recipients of 125 Neighborhood Leaders Award. \nLATINO AMERICANS is a landmark six\, one-hour documentary featuring interviews with nearly 100 Latinos and more than 500 years of History. This PBS documentary serie presents the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos\, who have helped shape the United States over the last 500-plus years and become\, with more than 50 million people\, the largest minority group in the US.\nThe Latino Americans Film Series will start on Thursday\, May 12 and continue through June.
