SUMMARY:Yoga at Lockerbie Marketplace
DESCRIPTION:Join us every Tuesday evening in August for FREE YOGA at Lockerbie Marketplace provided by The Hot Room Downtown! Step away from the hustle and bustle of Indianapolis for a relaxing experience in one of the city’s hidden green spaces. Take a moment to find your calm with instructor Joel Wayman and continue your week feeling relaxed and refreshed. \nAbout Wayman \nI have been in a relationship with fitness for over ten years. I am always finding ways to stay flexible\, lean\, strong and in the end transform my body to be healthier and my mind to become happier. My love for yoga started young with my mom\, who learned from her mom\, showing us children how to do stretches she used before the start of her days. It was not until 2016 that I started practicing yoga consistently. I was introduced to hot yoga by my best friend and cousin Bria. We decided on taking Bikram yoga class at The Hot Room. It felt incredible and my body and mind were feeling things I’d never felt before. I immediately signed up and started coming regularly as much as I could. It was transformative. I continued with my practice daily and tried not just Bikram\, but Vinyasa and Pilates as well. I found it to be incredibly important to practice as many different styles as I could and found my body to start changing and my mind to start healing. \nWithin 6 months of practicing I became an instructor at The Hot Room by going through an Inferno Hot Pilates training in Chicago. Two months later I started my 200 RYT at The Hot Room. \nI love teaching Inferno Hot Pilates because it’s like a workout party. Results are also noticeable within a short period of time as long as you commit to the practice. \nI love teaching Hot Power Vinyasa because the continuous flow of the class connects you to your breath and movements at the same time. As a dancer it makes it feel like doing a beautiful choreographed dance and my heart creates that connection with my mind and body. \nAs long as you’re doing the work you will create strength and find healing. Every style is different and every teacher brings something different to the table and I am honored to be apart of the team at The Hot Room. \nThis program is brought to you by Spark Placemaking and The Hot Room Downtown in partnership with Citimark\, Gershman Partners\, and Big Car Collaborative.

SUMMARY:Wagon of Wonders at The Feast of Lanterns
DESCRIPTION:Join us for one of Indianapolis’s most beautiful evenings in one of our most beautiful neighborhoods\, Windsor Park. Big Car will be there with our mobile museum and activities\,The Wagon of Wonders. \nAbout the Feast of Lanterns \nThe Feast of Lanterns is a historic festival based on the Near Eastside of Indianapolis. Its earliest incarnations in the late 1800s were of small gatherings and decorated front porches in nearby neighborhoods like Woodruff Place. By 1909 these neighborhood events had morphed in to a single\, larger festival that took place in Spades Park. Neighbors came out to hang paper lanterns—lit first by candles and later by electric lights. The park\, historic bandstand\, and numerous bridges were illuminated by the colorful lantern lights. Nearby homes would  participate by decorating their porches. As time passed—through World War I\, the Roaring 20s\, and Prohibition—the event continued to be celebrated. But by the 1940s the event was held only sporadically and eventually not at all. \nIn the early 2000s local neighbors from Windsor Park and Springdale were looking to begin an outdoor music festival and re-discovered the historic Feast of Lanterns festival. The theme of colorful lanterns lit throughout the park was incorporated with local music\,  craft vendors\, and neighborhood booths. Eventually the event was hosted by Near Eastside Community Organization (NESCO) for more than a decade. In 2015\, NESCO announced they would not be hosting Feast as part of their efforts to reorganize and refocus as an organization. This year’s Feast of Lanterns\, hosted by Lanterns Foundation\, brings a refocus on the origins of the event\, local neighbors and neighborhoods working together to not only put on a festival but also to build community.

SUMMARY:Yoga at Lockerbie

SUMMARY:Walking Wednesday-Indianapolis Oddities with Kipp Normand
DESCRIPTION:Believe it or not\, Indy is full of oddities. Explore what’s weird with artist Kipp Normand on this themed walk. \nFree and open to the public // All ages \nBrought to you by Spark Placemaking and Indianapolis City Market with support from Southwest Airlines and Project for Public Spaces through the Heart of the Community program. \nAbout Normand\nNormand has no formal training in art. His grandfather taught him to paint\, and his father taught him to build things. Normand is a scavenger and an obsessive collector\, searching streets and alleys\, junk stores and abandoned buildings looking for clues to explain the mystery of our world. He finds stories in discarded things: stories about himself and stories about all of us; our cities and our shared history. He first began making assemblage\, shadow boxes and collage images as a way to justify his relentless collecting. They soon became much more. They are Normand’s way to dig deep into the vast museum of this world and share his finds with anyone who cares to look. He works out of his studio at The Harrison Center for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Walking Wednesday-Public Art with Julia Muney Moore
DESCRIPTION:Public art is everywhere\, but sometimes we miss it when we are in a hurry or are quickly driving by. Take time to relax and enjoy our city’s public art in this themed walk led by Julia Muney Moore of the Arts Council of Indianapolis. \nMEET on the East Plaza of City Market. We don’t walk if the weather is terrible. She has curated\, selected\, and managed public art projects since 2000. Driven by a belief that public art should both inspire and reflect its community\, Julia’s favorite projects are those that challenge traditional approaches to bring a mixture of surprise\, thoughtfulness and joy into public space. \nAt the Arts Council\, Julia oversees community and civic public art projects\, public art master planning\, and ongoing programming to improve artists’ capacity to create public art. As the Public Art Administrator for Blackburn Architects\, Inc.\, she oversaw the selection\, fabrication and installation of public art in new construction; key projects included developing multi-million-dollar public art programs for Indianapolis International Airport and Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis\, and planning public art for cultural districts and other civic initiatives. He finds all of these concepts rife for excavation in the consumer-based material world and the built environment. His process allows for a certain degree of chance or disorder to come into play\, which he believes enables the phenomenal world to speak for itself. \nMade possible by the Arts Council of Indianapolis.

SUMMARY:Kelvin Burzon and Jenny Delfuego: Process/Progress
DESCRIPTION:Multi-genre visual artists Kelvin Burzon and Jenny Delfuego are creating movement-based work to accompany their visual art as part of a partnership between Big Car Collaborative and Indy Movement Arts.\nIn the fall of 2020\, Indy Movement Arts began experimenting with small\, digital fellowships as a small contribution towards the arts economy and keeping artistic production viable. The Process/Progress residency is the latest iteration of this experiment\, paying intermedia artists to reflect on their creative process and how they incorporate movement into their practice.\nThe residency was conceived as a digital one but given that Indy Movement Arts is rooted in movement and dance\, a discipline that often involves some immediate interchange between artist and audience\, the artists were commissioned in partnership between the two organizations to make a new work involving such an interchange.\n\nAbout the artists:\nKelvin Burzon’s recent work addresses\, but does not attempt to resolve\, the tension between religion and homosexuality. He examines religion’s traditions\, imagery\, theatricality\, and psychological vestige. By appropriating religious imagery and language\, the work is recontextualized by the insertion of LGBTQ members and activists. Burzon’s work has been exhibited abroad and all over the country and is part of several permanent collections including the Kinsey Institute and The Center for Photography at Woodstock.\n\nJenny Delfuego was born in Chicago to immigrant parents and has been exhibiting work under different monikers since the 90s. She examines ephemerality\, light and shadow\, and the edges of impermanence. The indications of our existence are often made and unmade in the time it takes to observe them. Her involvement with Indy Movement Arts has promoted experiments in communal conversation and collaboration. What marks\, what indications do these conversations leave? Delfuego studied painting at Indiana University and her work is in private and corporate collections on five continents.\n\nThe exhibit is made possible by The Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation\, The Arts Council of Indianapolis\, The City of Indianapolis and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\n\nPerformances will take place March 25th
