Jose Di Gregorio Mural on Safeway

Installation of the Jose Di Gregorio mural, Snowflake Shine, Sunrise After Dawn in the Garfield Park neighborhood in the fall of 2017

The Jose Di Gregorio Mural on Safeway, created by Jose Di Gregorio in 2014 and painted by him and by teens who do summer work with us from TeenWorks (see photos from that summer here), was originally planned for a westside location in 2014. Around this time, the Big Car team moved to Tube Factory artspace in the Garfield Park neighborhood. Three years later, the owners and managers of Safeway grocery in our Garfield Park neighborhood gave us permission to place the mural on their wall facing Shelby Street. The mural underwent some repair and retouch by neighborhood artists Emily Gable and Paul Pelsue. Emily also worked with Jose and other Big Car staff and volunteers from Eli Lilly & Co. and Buckingham to paint “Stargaze” on the building of South and Delaware streets across from The Alexander Hotel in 2013. Check out a video of that project here.
