About Bottom Level Tool Shop
The Bottom Level Toolshop (BLT) is Big Car’s wood shop located in the bottom level of the Tube Factory artspace. It serves as our space for fabrication needs as well as a space for providing shop safety classes, technical classes, and work space to the community.
Once community members complete the necessary safety classes, individuals have access to tools and facilities, allowing artist and communities members alike affordable workspace. Classes include a fee that can be waived based on need for safety classes. See photos and video clips of our work in the BLT shop here.
BLT is also home to future Big Car’s developing tool library. Members will be charged a yearly fee based on their income level and will be able to take certain tools offsite for a period of time, easing the cost on individuals for home repair. We researched a variety of programs like this, including a visit to Station North Tool Library in Baltimore.
We always welcome donations of new and good used tools to the library and shop. Volunteers are welcome to sign up to help as we work on further renovations to the shop.
Open hours are paused for the moment while we complete this work. People who have passed safety classes can work during the shop’s open hours and by appointment. Current shop hours — and times when we plan to work with volunteers on renovations — are (will expand as need grows):
Mondays 12-8 p.m.
Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
