We're taking January off to get ready for our biggest year ever. We thought now might be a good time to share a little about what Big Car is about and what we do. We're a gallery in Fountain Square, yes. But we're so much more...

Metamorpher: New work by Erin K. Drew
IDADA First Friday opening Feb. 5, 6-11 p.m.
Indianapolis-based Drew says her newest body of artwork "responds to recent events of my autobiography more directly than ever before. It pertains to loss and transition in my life and to metamorphosis in general. Specifically, I have been reacting to a quote I read in Elizabeth Kubler-Ross's book On Death and Dying about the grieving process. The quote suggested that healthy grieving may include periods of 'creative' (non-linear) growth that may seem to take the form of regression.
"My specific outlet for regressive growth has been in making nostalgic, holiday-themed artwork, akin to 'art' projects assigned in grammar school. I have particularly chosen to focus on Halloween as an opportunity for collective transformation and masquerade.I am also considering the implications presented by holiday 'decorations' and searching for their position within the Fine Art/Craft continuum. I am dissecting the everyday desire for adornment and disguise of our immediate environments. I believe that they communicate an underlying discontent with the 'normal' and mundane and vocalize a desire for individual growth and mass change." Drew is a member of Big Car Collective.
Music by Burnt Ones and others starts at 10 p.m. $5 suggested donation for the bands.
Made for Each Other series at Central Library
Big Car Collective's ongoing effort to bring engaging arts projects events to the community comes to Central Library in early 2010 at Clowes Auditorium under the umbrella of Made for Each Other. The series, also supported by the local Know No Stranger collective, includes an unusual twist on a lecture, experimental audio and video, a music competition with a twist and a live multimedia performance. All of the events are free of charge.
Seven Simultaneous Lectures
Wednesday, Feb. 24, 7 p.m.
Seven local cultural experts will simultaneously present short lectures with powerpoint on the topic of art and culture in Indianapolis and its role in the global scheme of things. Yes, these seven lecturers will present at the same time. They'll stand on the stage, facing the projections (backs to the audience). Each presenter will be assigned a number. People in the audience will have a set of numbers they hold up. Intermittently, the audience will vote on which of the lecturers they'd like to hear over the p.a. system. Then we'll turn the one or ones selected up through the p.a. system. Sometimes one will be amplified at a time, sometimes more than one. After brief introductions, the simultaneous lectures will happen for about 10-15 minutes as an audio/video performance-art piece. This is followed by a moderated discussion/conversation with the panelists and the audience. This event is part of the IndyTalks series.
Exploring Ubu Web
Wednesday, March 31, 7 p.m.
An amazing repository of experimental music and video, Ubu Web is a website that demands to be shared. Big Car Collective members and others will selected their favorites from Ubu Web to share on the big screen and through the auditorium's sound system.
Thrift Store Music
Wednesday, April 28, 7 p.m.
and Sunday May 2, 2-5 p.m.
This new, two-day event sends musicians to randomly drawn thrift stores to find instruments and objects on a budget for creating music they'll perform four days later. The musicians will only be able to use what they find at the thrift stores. The contest starts with a meeting for participants on Wednesday that includes a draw for thrift stores and an Indianapolis premier screening of Trimpin: The Sound of Invention, a new documentary about experimental musician and artist Trimpin. The new songs will then be performed on Sunday afternoon.
